According to prosecutors who released autopsy results in the case on Wednesday, the Princeton University undergraduate woman, whose disappearance lasted nearly a week in October, committed suicide.
on October 20 Misrach Ewunetie’s body was discovered behind the tennis courts of New Jersey’s Ivy League University. Six days earlier, at 3 a.m., the 20-year-old member of the Princeton Class of 2024 was last seen leaving her home, Scully Hall. Before that, she volunteered for a school club.
Mercer County prosecutors allege that a toxic mixture of the antidepressants bupropion, escitalopram and hydroxyzine, commonly used to treat allergy-related itching and can also be used for anxiety and related conditions, was the cause of Ewuentie’s death.
The young woman’s death was declared suicide by the medical examiner. She was the valedictorian of her high school class and received a full scholarship to Princeton.
When Ewunetie’s relatives became concerned about her not responding to messages, the search for her began in earnest. They reported her missing to campus authorities two days after she was last seen near her residence.
When she disappeared, her brother spoke of one “heartbreaking feeling of being gone.” At the time, her brother, Universe Ewunetie, described her as an amazing soul and the nicest person he had ever met. She’s the last person I’d expect to be missing.

Ewunetie studied at Princeton pursuing one sociology degree with a degree in computer applications, according to her LinkedIn profile. She attended Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School in Cleveland, Ohio, and in recent years has interned at McKinsey & Company and Bank of America.
According to her profileEwunetie was a 2021 LEDA Career Fellow who volunteered with the Greater Cleveland Food Bank in its condition for many years. Princeton referred to Ewunetie’s death as a “unthinkable tragedy” after the heartbreaking discovery of her remains.

The Middlesex Regional Medical Examiner’s Office has performed an official autopsy on Misrach Ewunetie. It determined that she had committed suicide and that her cause of death was “Bupropion, Escitalopram and Hydroxyzine Toxicity,” the announcement said.
