Nanny Ending Explained – What Happens to Aisha?

Throughout the movie, Aisha has a variety of visions making her see things that aren’t really there.

Aisha almost kills Rose in the bathtub after one of these spells. Luckily she is brought back just in time, drop the knife, and takes Rose to bed. Aisha apologizes to Rose, who tells her that her son Lamine made her do it out of jealousy. Rose turns around and says nothing to Aisha.

As we see throughout the movie, Lamine, who is about to turn seven, still lives in Senegal and Aisha tries to save enough to bring money her son to America. She hasn’t seen her son in a long time, but her maternal instincts haven’t left her as she treats Rose like a mother, something Lamine lacks.

She’s intimate with Rose, feed her African dishes and tell her African folk tales, and her relationship with Lamine has progressed into phone calls and messages.

When they finally get the money she owes for overtime she has enough to take her son and aunt to America, but neither of them get off the plane while they wait for them at the airport.

After a few moments, Aisha calls her aunt and finds her alone, without Lamine. Her aunt goes on to tell Aisha how Lamine was on the beach and got stuck under the waves and eventually drowned. Aisha is found on the docks from a New York river just before she jumps in and begins to drown, only to be rescued moments before death.

Water symbolism can be found throughout the movie. Aisha is constantly gasping for air, hoping to breathe, whether she’s drowning in her work or her personal life.

When they jumps into the waterit seems like she’s trying to drown herself and let the pain and pressure of everything that happened to her completely engulf her, but it could also just be a way for her to feel what her son had to go through without her.

Throughout the film, she spends time caring for someone else’s child instead of her own, hoping that one day she will be able to get her son back. She looks up while in the water and sees a vision of Lamine. A mermaid who appeared in the movie in a menacing light is now fully realized.

This mermaid was never meant to harm Aisha, but rather serve as a warning. In this sequence, the mermaid helps Aisha to the surface, which raises the question of whether she is still warning Aisha or if she is the menacing creature she appears to be, leading Aisha to her doom.

Nanny (2022) review

There’s nothing haphazard about “Nanny.” Every shot and scene seems to have been meticulously crafted with a specific situation in mind. Nevertheless, the procedures never seem forced and usually flow like a river.

Nikyatu Jusu’s screenplay isn’t perfect as things feel rushed in the final act, especially the entire arc of Lamine and its peak. And the use of metaphors and allegorical references can be overwhelming at times.

'Nanny' ending explained

The film seems very lavish and polished, which it was likely a joint creative decision made by Jusu and cinematographer Rina Yang. The latter uses a lot of purple and neon, as well as warm tones and bright lights, to create a moody yet welcoming environment for Aisha.

Anna Diop, who appears in almost every image, gives the best performance of her life as Aisha. Diop’s silent looks and facial twitches are enough to lure you in and root for her superhero despite the odds. There’s even a very well-placed Superman reference in the film.

With Jason Blum on board as an executive producer, “Nanny” has a clear expectation of being a Blumehose chiller. It ticks all the boxes thanks to its well-deserved fright.

Rather than being limited to that, it goes much further than a human drama with a lot of warmth, but also fascinating coming-of-age story of perseverance.
