Who is Jaye Davidson?
Jay Davidson is a former actor, who is perhaps best known for portraying the role of a transgender woman named Dil in the 1992 Oscar-winning romantic crime drama film “The Crying Game” for which he was honored with a prestigious Academy Award (Oscar) nomination. Moreover, he is recognized for appearing in the 1994 sci-fi movie “Stargate”.
Early life and bio
Alfred Amey was born under the zodiac sign Aries on the 21st March 1968, in Riverside, California, USA. He is of some Ghanaian ancestry through his father and English ancestry through his mother’s side. When he was two his family moved to England where he spent the rest of his childhood growing up in the town of Borehamwood along with his two sisters.
At age 16, he dropped out of high school and worked various odd jobs, including factory worker and production company errand boy, before eventually becoming a fashion assistant.
Acting career
Jaye plunged into the world of movie making by happy accident – while attending a wrap party for Derek Jarman’s critically acclaimed 1991 historical romantic drama film ‘Edward II’, Jaye became spotted by a casting assistant. who invited him to his first acting audition.
At the time, he had been appointed fashion assistant to two renowned British designers, Elizabeth and David Emanuel, and initially turned down the opportunity. However, dissatisfied with his employer’s company and looking for more money, he decided to give it a try. Without any acting experience as well as without educational background related to acting, Jaye auditioned for Neil Jordan’s 1992 thriller film “The Crying Game”.
Because of its ‘exotic and androgynous look’ as well as his ‘unstudied equilibrium’, Jay Davidson used to be form for the role of Dil.
With a surprising plot twist that reveals just that Jaye’s character is actually transgender, the film provoked a shocking yet positive response from audiences and critics alike. For his great performance, Jaye deserved nominations for a Oscar and a BAFTA Award in the Best Actor in a Supporting Role category. In addition, his portrayal of Dil was included at number 92 on Premiere Magazine’s 100 Greatest Movie Characters of All Time list, while in 2003 E! ranked it No. 94 on the 101 Most Shocking Moments in Entertainment.
Reluctant to accept his new-found fame, when he was offered the role of an alien god in Roland Emmerich’s 1994 sci-fi blockbuster “Stargatehe asked for $1 million in compensation, considering it an unacceptable offer. However, his request was granted and he was cast in the role of Ra. Later that year, Davidson appeared in the TV musical drama film “Jiggery Pokery” while in 1995 he was featured in the documentary titled “Catwalk”.
After a break of 15 years, in 2009 Jaye made his most recent on-screen acting appearance in the short comedy film “The Borghilde Project”.
Private life
He retired from acting and enjoys life mysterious lifefar from the attention, publicity and fame of the media. Jaye is gay, and since July 2017 it is married to his partner Thomas Clarke.
