App Store may suggest a useful app to you from time to time, but you can’t rely on it to discover new apps. Places like Reddit communities or Product Hunt can also be very broad for what you’re looking for.
So a team of engineers at Basedash, a startup that helps companies connect their databases to admin panels, created a product called Dockhunt that lets you discover new Mac apps just by looking at docks.
The idea is simple: people put their Mac docks on the site and others can look at it as if they were exploring their own dock. The Dockhunt site also has a list of top apps that shows how many users have pinned that app to their docks. The app makers told businessroundups.org they are considering putting in a filter that will remove popular apps like Chrome, Slack, and Spotify to allow users to discover indie apps.
Basedash’s team said designer Tom Johnson had the idea of creating a tool that would allow users to browse a Mac dock on the web. A few engineers collaborated to build Dockhunt, which was finally released late last month.
If you want to put in your own dock, you should download the Dockhunt app and run it. Alternatively, you can also use a command line method to place the dock. Specifically, Dockhunt only captures pinned apps and not apps that are open but don’t have a permanent place in your dock. At the time of writing, more than 1,100 people had placed their docks on the site.
Currently, the site shows the dock with the username or Twitter handle. The Dockhunt team is also considering a mode that would allow people to post their docks anonymously.
