The first major new Netflix series of 2022, Archive 81, proved to perform well globally. However, Netflix has decided not to pursue a second season. That’s why the show was cancelled. What is known about the cancellation and the reasons why a second season was not obtained is detailed below.
The horror series, which premiered worldwide on January 14, 2022, is one of the first significant 2022 Netflix Original Series releases.

Archive 81: Netflix season 2 renewal status
Official Renewal Status: Ended March 24, 2022
50/50 is how we predict overtime.
A brand new show like Archive 81 You are unlikely to receive an order for several seasons in advance, and in fact this is not the case. Instead, the program will be extended if it meets specific criteria. This includes audience size, stickiness (the percentage of viewers who start watching a program and finish it), and other elements.
On March 24, Deadline announced that the show would not be returning. No other information was given.
We have not decided to renew or terminate based on viewings (more on that in a second). In week 2, the show seemed to gain momentum, but a drop of almost 50% in weeks 2-3 could be terrible news for the program. The drop-off was similar in Cowboy Bebop.

As of February 18, 2022, according to our sources, no decision has been made regarding the future of the show.
The creators of the show have undoubtedly laid the groundwork for a second season. In an interview with Variety, they revealed they had plans for more, which we’ll get to in a minute.
“I think there are a lot of stories that we didn’t get to tell in that eight-episode first season,” said creator Rebecca Sonnenshine. part of Season 2. That’s great that hopefully we leave people with questions. I try not to answer questions before people ask them as an audience. You don’t want to preload information. We have a lot of cool things planned for Davenport.

How well did Netflix rate Archive 81?
Bringing in significant revenue for Netflix is one of the best ways to renew a Netflix show. This is a challenging cast for a debut show, so let’s see how Archive 81 fared on Netflix.
We can examine exactly how well Archive 81 performed on Netflix thanks to statistics from various sources.
We know that the show was watched for 129.47 million hours in its first three weeks on the service, according to the recently launched Netflix Top 10 website.
Since the lowest number of hours watched that week was 16.69 million, the show lost viewers between January 31 and February 6 and may have dropped by as much as 50% from week 3.
Nielsen can give us an idea of how well the program did in the United States. The fact that the show saw a significant increase in viewership from week one to week two according to Nielsen’s top 10 supports what was stated above. This was probably due to the many press releases and social media posts about the series.
- Week ending January 16 – #8 – 329 million minutes watched
- Week ending January 23 – #2 – 1,035 million minutes watched
- Week ending January 30 – #8 – 462 million minutes watched
Between weeks two and three you can observe a halving of the viewing time. Probably a fatal blow.
The grimest picture for Archive 81 can be painted by Google Trends, which shows a sharp decline after weeks 2 and 3 to the point where it barely registers.
According to IMDb MovieMeter data, the program rose to the third most popular position on the platform between January 16 and January 23. As shown above, the series was able to gain momentum after its second week when it peaked at number 69 the week it was released. Archive 81 was ranked 21st between January 30 and February 6. For the week ending Feb. 13, it fell to #56.
Netflix trailers often provide insight into how well a show will ultimately do Netflix. The trailer has maxed out at just over 2 million views, which is close to Raising Dion S2 and Vikings: Valhalla but less than shows like Stranger Things and The Cuphead Show!
What to expect from the second season of Archive 81
Let’s quickly go through what happened in the last episode. Warning: This sentence contains a spoiler.
Melody meets Steve at the mental hospital, but struggles to accept that she can’t go. In the end, she manages to break free and ends up rescuing Jess. Dan saves Melody in the end, but he’s stuck in the 1990s (specifically 1994 – a great year by the way).

The story ends there, so it makes sense that there are a lot of unanswered questions and we want to know what’s next. Our best guess about the plot is that the tables are now turned, with Melody doing everything she can to save Dan.
Barring a few clues, most of the primary cast will likely make a cameo in some capacity.
Sonnanstine teased that it was a “exciting part of our story” and predicted that Samuel (played by Evan Jonigkeit) would definitely make a comeback.
