Why is Cecily Strong leaving Saturday Night Live?

An extensive list of actors who left Saturday Night Live before (or in this case during) the current season includes Pete Davidson, Aidy Bryant, Kate McKinnon, Kyle Mooney, Alex Moffat, Melissa Villasenor, Aristotle Athari, and Chris Redd.

The news that old cast member Cecily Strong would bankrupt the show ahead of last night’s episode, the last of the year. While Kenan Thompson is still employed there, given the high turnover of staff, he should eventually be willing to go (though he’s free to do this whenever he wants as long as we get one last “What Up With That”.).

Strong received a substantial, almost show-wide farewell on Friday night with two segments devoted to her departure. She first appeared in a “Weekend Update” sketch in which she portrayed the recurring role of Cathy Anne and revealed that she was going to prison (with a joke about how she has friends internally who are doing well, with a photo emerging of hardened inmate versions of Bryant and McKinnon).

Later she appeared in a half sketch which started off funny and winking before growing into a cute little musical number: the host, Austin Butler, appeared as “casual Elvis” (because they couldn’t afford a costume) to sing “Blue Christmas” with the majority of the SNL cast as Strong, who played a RadioShack employee on her last day reminiscing with her boss about how she had been at… RadioShack… for… 11 years, but only eight were good. This is a funny nod to SNL’s continued relevance.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Strong’s mid-season departure was planned from the beginning of the season. Still, viewers feared something was off when she was absent from the season premiere closing credits.
