After the body camera evidence of the Tire Nichols shooting by police in Memphis was made public, protests against police brutality were conducted peacefully in cities across the country.
Nichols, a 29-year-old black driver, was detained on January 7 for what police deemed dangerous. According to a recently made public police video, Nichols was brutally assaulted by law enforcement officers after he attempted to leave on foot. He died of his injuries in hospital three days later.
Who is Tire Nichols?
This is reported by The Associated Press, Nichols fathered a 4-year-old child and was known to his family as an avid skateboarder and wildlife photographer from Sacramento, California. His son is also called Nichols. He landed in Memphis just in time to avoid the pandemic, and soon after began working for FedEx, one of the city’s top employers. This is according to a story from The New York TimesNichols worked for the company for about nine months before his death.
At a memorial gathering, noted Nichols’ step-grandmother Lucille Washington about her grandson that:
“He was one of those people who made everyone around them happy.”
