He has worked at the Rocky Mountain News and the Los Angeles Times, among other American daily newspapers. His 1997 Times article about 1950s fighter Bob “Bombardier” Satterfield, who he found sleeping on sofas in LA, is credited by the Daily Mail as his big break.

The article “Resurrecting the Champ”, written by Moehringer in 1998, was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in Feature Writing. A movie of the same name has been made starring Samuel L. Jackson.

Where is JR Moehringer now?

It’s true that the fictional JR Moehringer in The Tender Bar gets the inspiration to write his memoir while a student at Yale, but the real Moehringer spent nearly two decades as a journalist before ever writing a word.

After working as a news assistant for The New York Times, he went on to cover local news in Breckenridge, Colorado for Rocky Mountain News in 1990 and then in Orange County, California for The Los Angeles Times in 1994.

Moehringer’s “photograph of Gee’s Bend, an isolated river town in Alabama home to many descendants of slaves, and how a proposed ferry to the mainland would affect it,” published in 2000, won the Pulitzer Prize in Feature Writing.

In 2012, Moehringer released Sutton, a novel based on the life of real-life bank robber Willie Sutton; in 2016 he wrote ghostwriter Shoe Dog, a memoir by Nike co-founder Phil Knight.
