They first met when they were teenagers in a high school in Serbia. After eight years of dating, they got engaged in 2013. While Jelena studied luxury brand management at Bocconi University in Milan and Novak tried to make it to the ATP tour, their relationship got off to a rocky start.

Despite this, they still managed to make it work. Speaking of those days, hello! quoted Jelena as saying:

“Our getting together was almost science fiction.”

“I was a student who barely made ends meet, and he was a very young tennis player who also had no money for expensive travel.”

She continued:

“Aeroplanes at that time were something completely out of our reach.”

“We came up with and came up with these plans of how to meet, how to make our relationship work.”
