What is known about the victims is listed below.

My Nhan, a 65-year-old woman described by her family as a regular at the Monterey Park dance studio where the tragedy took place, is one of the victims named so far.

A family statement posted on Twitter by journalist Tiffany Liou – whose husband was Ms Nhan’s cousin – said her death was “still sinking in”.

“She spent so many years going to the dance studio in Monterey Park on weekends,” said the statement. “It’s what she loved to do.”

“But unfairly, Saturday was her last dance.”

The family’s statement also stated that Mrs. Nhan – whom they affectionately called “MyMy” – was the first person killed in the shooting.

Ming Wei Ma, a former student who helped run the dance studio, has been named by The LA Times as one of the additional victims.

Dance instructor Lauren Woods claimed that Mr. Ma was a critical part of the studio on Facebook.

“He was so cute to me, and I could tell he was the heart of Star Ballroom,” said Mrs. Woods. “There were so many dancers, teachers and organizers associated with Ma, and I will miss him very much.”

A few mourners came to the studio Monday morning to pay their respects.

By mid-morning, flowers, candles, and other memorials had gathered in front of a gate. “Victims and families, you are in our prayers”, said a letter attached to a bouquet of roses.

A woman carefully approached the monument, knelt for a brief moment of silence, then laid a yellow bouquet of flowers on the floor.

Jovita and Alfonso Matematico left the victims alone with their silent prayers. The married Catholic couple traveled by car from downtown Los Angeles to Monterey Park to pay their respects.

“We went to church today at 8am and prayed for them: may they rest in peace,” said Jovita, 64.

Baptist preacher Meko Seto, 41, another mourner, told the BBC the shooting devastated the neighbourhood.

“It was said that people were afraid”, he said, recalling a deluge of text messages he’d received. “Many of our Church members are from Monterey Park. They were shocked.”

“We mourn,” Mr. Seto said. “We never thought this would happen in a million years.”
