Call the Midwife’s popularity isn’t going away any time soon. Season 12 follows the 2022 Christmas special, and as always, creator Heidi Thomas has a ton in store for viewers.

In typical Call the Midwife fashion, many pregnancies occupy the Midwives of Nonnatus House. There is a newcomer who is likely to cause “confusion”, Trixie and Matthew take an important step in their relationship that also has difficulties. Lucille isn’t feeling her usual cheerful self. There is a newcomer who will probably “ruffle the feathers”.

But when a show has been on the air for as long as Call the Midwife, one inevitably wonders how much longer it can be successful.

“Nobody ever said, ‘We want 10 years of Call the Midwife,'” Thomas told The i. “I think I would have been traumatized if they did.” Season 13 has been confirmed, but beyond that, there’s no word at the moment.

“That was announced a long time ago, but we don’t know about 14,” Laura Main (Sister Shelagh Turner) told the Sunday express.

‘We haven’t heard anything. To be honest, I don’t know anything beyond 13. Not yet. Perhaps there will be an announcement when series 12 airs in the new year.

“It’s an incredible privilege to be able to look back on 10 years of Call the Midwife, and yet know that our journey is far from over,” said Thomas when seasons 12 and 13 were announced. “We’re happy to continue for a few more years.”

“Like Nonnatus House, we have a proud past, but an even more exciting future – full of old favourites, fresh faces, higher hemlines and new ideas. The stories we tell are like babies – they just keep coming, we love them all and we promise to do our best for everyone.”

With new episodes now airing in March, American viewers will unfortunately have to wait much longer. If this is your first time watching, you should know that PBS often receives the shows a little later than they appear elsewhere.

The exciting information was shared on the show’s official Instagram account with the caption: “NEWS!!! The 12th season of Call the Midwife premieres in the UK on January 1!

We are delighted to let you know that the BBC has revealed the start date for our new series, which will air ONE WEEK AFTER our upcoming Christmas special on January 1st!

“We’re so glad you don’t have to wait long for our new stories and can jump straight into 1968!!”

Who will appear in Call the Midwife season 12?

For the 12th season, most regular Call the Midwife actors should be back. Unfortunately, it turns out that Sister Frances, played by Ella Bruccoleri, and Sister Hilda, played by Fenella Woolgarboth of whom were rumored to be leaving in this year’s Christmas special are going (at least temporarily).

Rebecca Gethings, who will play Sister Veronica, is a new actor who has joined the ensemble. She said about her character: “She often puts her foot in it and ruffles feathers. But she always does it for good. But she is not shy and withdrawn.”

“She doesn’t wait to be invited in. She just storms in and gets to work, because in terms of her ministry, she’s worth nothing unless she changes.”

Other guest stars for Season 12 will be confirmed in due course.

Call The Midwife season 12 plot

After the train crash at the end of Season 11, life in Poplar mostly resumes in Season 12. The midwives at Nonnatus House welcome a heavily pregnant Rhoda Mullucks to the maternity ward; she is understandably anxious after her last child was born with congenital disabilities in Season 5 after Dr. Patrick Turner had prescribed her thalidomide.

According to an earlier statement by Thomas, the following season would also chronicle historical medical developments and include a ventouse administration for the first time.

“Again, we’re looking at some powerful stories about how society was changing at the time,” she said.

Of course, not all changes will be for the better. Enoch Powell’s inflammatory anti-immigration remark that led to his expulsion from the shadow cabinet will also have a significant impact on the chapter ahead.

“In the first episode of the new series I realized that the timing of that episode coincided exactly with Enoch Powell’s Rivers of Blood speech, which made a huge difference, and not a very positive difference to race relations in Britain,” Thomas explained.

“It was a big turning point for our society and how we talked about and behaved towards people who came here from other countries, so that was something we felt we had to address.”

How many seasons of Call the Midwife are there?

The BBC has renewed Call the Midwife for seasons 12 and 13 (2023 and 2024 respectively), which should take viewers to 1969 or perhaps the 1970s in regards to the show’s timeline.

The enduring success of Call the Midwife is a monument to the great dedication and ingenuity of the creator Heidi Thomas and the producers, Pippa Harris and Ann Tricklebank, according to Piers Wenger, Director of BBC Drama.

“We are delighted to have secured the future of Call the Midwife for two more series in addition to those currently in production. We look forward to more adventures for the residents of Nonnatus House in the coming years.”

What Happens in Call the Midwife Season 12?

As for potential storylines, Nonnatus House has no shortage of drama that could happen. Heidi Thomas, the show’s writer and creator, promised, “The stories we tell are like kids — they just keep coming, we love them all, and we swear we’ll do our best for every story.” In April 1968 Nonnatus House changed.

The sisters want to make an excellent first impression on Sister Veronica, their newest recruit. Racial tensions lingered in Poplar after Enoch Powell’s shocking statement. Nancy and Trixie team up to care for a patient nearing the end of their lives as Fred is angry that the Civil Defense Corps has been disbanded in an official letter.

In terms of the story, Poplar will go through some challenging circumstances and important events for Trixie, a recruit, and Nonnatus House.
