When does Yellowstone 1923 season 1 come out? The cast, plot and much more

The creator of the western drama Yellowstone (2018-), Taylor Sheridan, seems unstoppable in the industry.

The Dutton family, owners of the famed Yellowstone ranch, take center stage in the highly anticipated spin-off 1923 (formerly known as 1932).

Created by 101 Studios, Paramount Network-owned MTV Entertainment Studios, the sitcom features iconic artists such as Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren. The prequel is the sixth series that Taylor Sheridan and Paramount have invested in.

The sequel to the spin-off series 1883, 1923 is set approximately 35 years before the birth of John Dutton III, Yellowstone’s protagonist.

The focus in 1923 will be on the influence of major historical events such as the First World War and Prohibition on the next generation of Dutton.

Yellowstone prequel 1923 release date

On December 18, 2022, Paramount+ will offer access to the 1923 premiere in the US and Canada. The release date for the UK and Australia is December 19. No release date has been specified for other countries. December 18, 1923 is unavailable for viewing until an unknown time.

The 1923 first season will consist of eight episodes, but it is unclear when these will air. The show’s creators have also stated that the 1923 season 2 will have eight episodes.

The prequel series was filmed in Montana. So it’s probably currently in the editing stage before release.

Chris McCarthy, CEO of MTV Entertainment Studios and ViacomCBS Media Networks, had this to say about the upcoming series in regards to how 1923 would fit into the Yellowstone universe:

“With the brilliant mind and gifted storytelling of Taylor Sheridan, we have created an entirely new world to explore with 1883 as we expand Yellowstone, and with 1932 [now 1923]we open a new chapter in this fast-growing universe.”

According to the promotional trailer, we got our first live-action glimpse of the main characters in 1923. 1923 won’t be a peaceful production due to the presence of World War I footage, gunfights, and actors brandishing guns.

The plot of the 1923 Yellowstone prequel

The initial focus of the planned Yellowstone prequel was on the effects of the Great Depression and the repeal of Prohibition on the American West and the Dutton family who lived there.

But with its new name, the show will focus on the post-World War I years, including Western expansion, Prohibition, and the Great Depression.

While the latter didn’t begin in earnest until 1929, it did so in Montana a decade earlier.

It is possible that Taylor Sheridan noticed a historical problem with the initial time frame. In 1926, Montana became the first state to revoke Prohibition. Therefore, if Sheridan had kept the original 1932 title, the subject of the show could not have been the Prohibition era.

The fact that the show is set towards the end of World War I, in 1917, will also have a bigger and more complicated effect on the characters.

The Dutton family’s journey out of poverty and into a better lot was chronicled in the first Yellowstone spur in 1883.

The upcoming prequel will reveal how the Duttons overcame historical difficulties in their new home.

The official 1923 description writes:

“1923 focuses on the next two generations of the Dutton family as they struggle to survive historic drought, lawlessness and Prohibition, and an epidemic of cattle theft; all struggled under the cloud of Montana’s Great Depression, which preceded the nation by nearly a decade. “

The disputes between the Dutton family and native tribes will be present in 1923, just like in the original series. Native American stories are dear to Taylor Sheridan and are an important part of most of his concerts, as he has often demonstrated.

Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford, two legendary actors, were cast members in 1923. Ford will reprise his role as Jacob Dutton, the father of the Yellowstone Ranch and the brother of 1883 James Dutton, Paramount+ announced in early September. At the same time, Helen Mirren plays Cara Dutton, his wife.

According to Vanity Fair, the leaders of the Dutton clan, on whom the entire membership depends, will be portrayed in the program as Jacob and Cara Dutton.

In an exclusive interview, Oscar-winning Helen Mirren, who plays Cara on the series, revealed that her character most likely moved from Ireland to America during the potato famine of the 19th century. To symbolize her recent immigration, the actress asked her to adopt an Irish accent on the show.

Harrison Ford, who plays Indiana Jones, also revealed that Jacob and Cara have been married since 1923 and represent a strong partnership that holds everything together.

Game of Thrones actor Jerome Flynn, who played mercenary Ser Bronn of the Blackwater in the fantasy epic, will collaborate with the award-winning performers on the spot. Banner Creighton, “a stubborn Scottish brogue and the leader of the local sheepmen”, was to be played by Flynn in 1923. (See Deadline)

The “sheep men” and the Duttons are competing farmers in the episode who use the same territory to graze their cattle and are eager to fight for property rights.

The Sons of Anarchy and Terminator 2 actor Robert Patrick has also been chosen for the Yellowstone spin-off. He will take on the character of Sheriff William McDowell, a family friend of Dutton’s.

Character information is revealed in increasing amounts as the 1923 debut approaches.

We know that John Dutton Sr., who served as ranch manager in 1883, and Cara Dutton are the patriarch and matriarch of the Yellowstone Ranch, respectively.

While Emma Dutton, John’s wife, helps Cara manage the day-to-day running of the house. The son of John and Emma and great-grandfather of John Dutton III, Jack is a devoted ranch worker eager to take a place in the family.

Elizabeth Strafford, who will marry Jack. Zane is a devoted and obedient ranch foreman, just like Yellowstone’s Rip. And Teonna, a young native lady who was forcibly enrolled in an Indian boarding school, is another of the novel’s vital characters.

On December 18, 2022, the Yellowstone prequel 1923 will air on Paramount+.
