Toews was selected first overall by the Tri-City Americans in the 2003 WHL Bantam Draft, but he chose to play the 2003-2004 and 2004-2005 seasons of midget AAA hockey at Shattuck-Saint Mary’s, a boarding school in Faribault, Minnesota. On February 3, 2007, just days after winning the gold medal, Toews received recognition from the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League (AHL) for his tournament achievements. He also received an honorary jersey.
