In the first round of the 1987 MLB draft, Tinsley, a student at Shelby County High School in Shelbyville, Kentucky, was elected. That year, he began his professional career by signing a deal with the Medford A’s of the Northwest League. In 1989 and 1990, he played for the Madison Muskies of the Midwest League. In 1991, he was promoted to the Southern League’s AA Huntsville Stars, where he played 92 games and hit .224.

On July 26, 1991, he was traded by the Athletics to the Cleveland Indians along with minor leaguer Brook Jacoby. He played from 1990 to 1992 with the Canton-Akron Indians of the Eastern League. He then promoted to the AAA Colorado Springs Sky Sox to complete the 1992 campaign.

The Seattle Mariners took Tinsley off waivers on September 21, 1992. He spent most of 1993 with the Calgary Cannons of the Pacific Coast League, playing 111 games and hitting 302. He made his major league debut on April 6, 1993 against the Toronto Blue Jays. In the fifth inning pinch-hit and continued to play left field. He had one walk and one strikeout in two at bats.
