Tony Dungy and James Brown speak at Anti-Gay Preacher’s Rally

Andrew Wommack, a rabid anti-gay Christian preacher who equates homosexuality with murder, has hosted an event where NFL commentators Tony Dungy and James Brown have spoken for years.

In March, at an event called “Advance Men,” the two will again show their support for Wommack’s ministry. Wommack hosts it at his Colorado Bible College, Charis. Among other things, the evangelist and his institution proclaim anti-gay and anti-trans views while claiming to follow Christian teachings.

Over the course of his career, Dungy has consistently spoken out against LGBT rights. In 2006, while still the highly effective head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, Dungy organized a fundraiser to fight same-sex marriage.

Despite supporting convicted dog killer Michael Vick and indicted alleged wife beater Ray Rice, he has spoken out against the “lifestyle” of gay NBA star Jason Collins and claimed he wouldn’t want a gay player like Michael Sam on his team.

Brown has been a regular customer since 2006 CBS evening news” and “60 Minutes” as a journalist and as part of CBS’s NFL coverage. Brown has not been publicly quoted by Outsports as making negative statements about the gay community or opposing LGBT equality.

Brown has not explicitly supported the anti-gay dogma, despite his close association with anti-gay Wommack and his Bible school. Despite repeated requests from Outsports, CBS has been silent about James or the network’s comments.

Both men, who describe themselves as “best friends,” are loved in the NFL and the sports media. Dungy in particular has been getting a pass from his fellow footballers for years for his anti-gay sentiments due to his expansive image as a leader and success on the pitch. NBC continued the practice by not commenting on this article.

Andrew Wommack’s anti-LGBT rhetoric uses cruel language

Some of the openly anti-LGBT statements Wommack has made in public on several occasions should be well known to these two individuals. Wommack’s anti-gay sentiments are not hidden. In 2021 he said: “We should put a label on their forehead: ‘This could be dangerous to your health.'” suggesting that being homosexual is so destructive to people’s lives that a warning label might be appropriate.

He also stated that being gay is more harmful to the body than smoking: Wommack spends the better part of an hour on one of his online lectures condemning homosexuality and the gay “lifestyle.” “We need to speak out against the behavior because society needs to establish what norms are,” Wommack says in a sermon. “Gay*sexuality is accepted – they have gay prides…. Now they are lobbying for acceptance and even promoting it as an accepted and normal lifestyle, which it is not.”

“If you are a Christian, if you claim to be a Christian, and you promote homosexuality as an accepted lifestyle… if you believe that, you are taking a complete stand against the word of God.” He has openly drawn parallels between homosexuality and murder. Last year, Wommack said transgender people are “of the devil. … Satan is the author of it.”
