Titans QB Ryan Tannehill is definitely out for the season

Due to a right ankle injury that will likely require surgery, ESPN announced Wednesday that Titans starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill would “very likely” miss the remainder of the season. During Tennessee’s opening offense on Sunday, outside linebacker Khalil Mack of the Los Angeles Chargers stepped on Tannehill’s right foot, causing the injury.

Tannehill was wheeled in to the dressing room by the team’s trainers. Wrapped heavily around his right ankle, the quarterback returned to the game after missing just one offensive series. After the Titans’ 17-14 loss, coach Mike Vrabel said of Tannehill: “We will never question his toughness or his willingness to come back and help us win.”

The ankle Tannehill hurt in Week 6 against the Indianapolis Colts was the same one that was damaged again. Malik Willis, the team’s backup quarterback, started the next two games while Tannehill sat out.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, Willis covered all first-team representatives. On Wednesday, the Titans added veteran quarterback Joshua Dobbs to their active roster. They are 7-7 and first in the AFC South. If Tannehill was unable to play, Willis would take over starting and Dobbs would serve as backup.

The Titans, who are 7-7 overall and the AFC South has lost four consecutive games in the past two years in a row and now has a one-game lead over the division’s other teams. On Saturday, they will host the Texans (1-12-1), the club Willis are in NFL debut on October 30 and defeated by a score of 17-10. Two of Tennessee’s last three games of the regular season will be played outside of Nissan Stadiumin Jacksonville, against the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Dallas Cowboys.

This year, Tannehill passed for 2,536 yards, scoring 13 times and throwing for six picks. NFL.com’s Paul Kuharsky was the first to report that he was probably ready for this season. Dillon Radunz, an offensive lineman with the Titans, went to injured reserve on Wednesday after suffering a knee injury against the Chargers on Sunday.
