‘The Eternal Daughter’ ending, explained: what is the film about?

Horror drama ‘The Eternal Daughter’ by Joanna Hogg looks and feels very personal to the filmmaker, just like most of her earlier films. For Rosalind’s birthday, Julie plans to take her and her dog, Louis, to a mansion turned hotel, and the story follows their adventures there.

While her mother Rosalind and faithful cat Louis quietly take in the scenery, Julie listens intently as the taxi driver tells a terrifying tale of seeing an apparition while driving through the misty British countryside. When they reach their destination, a once grand mansion turned hotel, Julie reports to reception.

The reservation appears to be flawed, as the clerk has trouble locating both Julie’s booking and the woman’s apparent request for a ground floor room. The receptionist gives off a very cold and possibly unpleasant vibe, she initially refuses to give a room on the first floor, despite the fact that all the keys to the hotel’s empty rooms are out in the open.

Once the guests are settled in their room of choice, the receptionist rushes off before Julie can continue her sentence. At the end of her shift that night, and every night after that, Julie witnesses the receptionist being taken away by a car with loud music and erratic driving, presumably by her lover.

Julie has trouble settling into the hotel due to the unusually high winds and planks creaking everywhere. Still, she’s determined to get some work done on her laptop. A filmmaker by trade, Julie is having an even harder time than usual writing a movie about her mother and their relationship.

She takes refuge in a cozy corner on a higher floor of the house, where the temperature is more pleasant, and tries to write, but the disturbances keep returning. Julie’s condition seems alarming, given the vacant hotel, the alarmingly loud noises, and the fact that her mother doesn’t seem to notice.

Julie goes back to her room after her very unusual birthday meal, and Bill arrives to comfort her when she collapses again. Bill, the gardener, had turned down her invitation to her mother’s birthday dinner, citing family obligations, but here he was.

Again, this can be interpreted as a nod to the idea that, like Rosalind, Bill is a figment of someone’s imagination. The next morning, after a hearty breakfast, Julie begins pecking at her laptop with apparent ease. Julie’s writer’s block seems to subside after she tells us that thoughts of her dead mother haunt her.

Julie leaves the hotel around the holidays and seems much happier and more content, perhaps because she’s finally finished writing the screenplay. Bill escorts Julie and Louis out of the hotel to where a taxi is waiting for them, and she expresses her gratitude for his help. After getting into the taxi, Julie watches as the vehicle drives off.

At its core, “The Eternal Daughter” offers nothing new or remarkable. The film is impressive in that it can keep viewers entertained throughout and make them think about a wide range of concerns and possibilities.

A sense of mystery persists even after the story ends, as we are never told or given any suggestions as to why Julie saw a lady’s ghostly face or how Louis had left the room only to get there again. Julie is hallucinating or remembering something from the past.

A more far-fetched theory is that Julie went to the hotel with her mother when she was alive, and that parts of her memories from that time are intertwined with her current one. While Louis may have left the room at the time, he is present at this point.

yet Julie continues to haunt events from her past in an effort to make her mother happy. Both the music and the visuals evoke the atmosphere of classic gothic horror films, making it an enjoyable experience for fans of the genre. The film’s rich sound design may make it seem like there’s more drama than terror, but it’s the sound that will captivate you at first.

Wrapped in the guise of a horror novel in which a lady hallucinates and sees the dead, “The Eternal Daughter” appears to be a straightforward account of a daughter’s attempts to live up to her mother’s expectations long after her death.
