Teenager Ashton Torgerson involved in terrifying crash at the Chili Bowl

In the 11th round of the Chili Bowl on Wednesday night, outdoor pole sitter and 16-year-old rookie midget driver Ashton Torgerson was involved in a terrifying accident that sent him thrown from the car.

When Torgerson’s vehicle crashed into the outside retaining wall, he was in seventh place and his car began to roll. Even when his car finally came to a stop after flipping over, rescuers were already on their way.

When the race was stopped due to a red flag, the FloRacing team had to leave the scene. Minutes later, it was reported that the driver had woken up and was communicating with authorities and rescuers. The driver’s identity was announced through the PA system and FloRacing broadcast after a short delay.

To keep Torgerson hidden from the public, medical personnel took an ambulance onto the track and stabilized him before transporting him inside. For minutes the ambulance waited in the middle of the dirt road, probably stabilize the patient before making the rail journey to the hospital.

At the same time as the drivers meeting was called at turn two with only 20 laps left in the night, the Racers for Christ Champlain came through the loudspeaker to implore prayer from the spectators, crew and religious drivers. There was a muffled ovation as the ambulance slowly circled the track.

Crews accompanied their drivers to the circuit, where they lined up for the remainder of the race. The race again started without the infamous Turn-One Chili Bowl Flip Count tracker, which was disabled.

Ashton Torgerson has been transported to a hospital in Tulsa following an accident during Wednesday’s preparatory main event at the Chili Bowl Nationals. Ashton was alert and communicating with track officials before being transported. We will update when we have more information.
