On July 6, 2020, Smiley announced that his daughter Aaryn had been shot the previous weekend following a road accident. Smiley joined Omega Psi Phi after being accepted into the graduation chapter, Psi Rho. Smiley reported the death of his 32-year-old son, Brandon Smiley, on January 29, 2023.
He was unconscious at his home at 10:07 Sunday morning and the UAB hospital pronounced him dead at 10:52. No signs of trauma or malicious intent were discovered during an autopsy. The cause of death is not yet known.
