The Early Years of Randall Emmett
In March 1971, Randall Emmett was born in Miami, Florida. Before moving to Los Angeles in the mid-1990s, he attended the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan. He quickly apprenticed with producer Jerry Bruckheimer in Los Angeles.
He then switched to International Creative Management, a talent agency. He met Mark Wahlberg through ICM, who later asked “Randy” (as he is also known) to serve as his assistant.
Randy is rumored to have served at least a small portion of the inspiration for the “Turtle” character in the Wahlberg-produced television series “Entourage.”
Randall Emmett career
Randall founded Emmett/Furla/Oasis Films, also known as EFO Films, in 1998. Furla is descended from a wealthy former hedge fund manager and filmmaker George Furla. Oasis Films is a holding company headquartered in Dubai.
The company made its debut film in 2000, a DVD-only remake of ‘Escape to Grizzly Mountain’. The company created a live record for comedian Andrew Dice Clay the same year.
The company has gradually discovered a lucrative formula where films are made in distant, tax-friendly countries on a small budget.
Typically, an older action star who accepts a huge paycheck for little to no effort, like Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, Robert De Niro, Nicolas Cage, John Travolta, Al Pacino or Steven Seagal star in the films. The film is then mainly sold abroad and via on-demand streaming services in the US.
For example, Bruce Willis only appears for seven minutes in the EFO-produced movie ‘Hard Kill’. Incredibly, at the time of writing, this method had grossed almost $1.2 billion worldwide.
Examples of EFO films are:
Playback, Empire State, Escape Plan, 2 Guns, Lone Survivor, Vice, Heist, Amityville: The Awakening, Aftermath and Silence. Half Past Dead, Wonderland, Loverboy, Edison, The Wicker Man, 88 Minutes, Finding Rin Tin Tin, Rambo, Day of the Dead, Playback and Playback.
The 50 Cent Starz television series ‘Power’, which had six seasons between 2014 and 2020, was also produced by EFO.
