Authorities in southwestern Oregon found a tied and beaten lady in a residence last week, and a CNN station reports that the kidnapping suspect has since committed suicide by gunshot. According to CNN station KTVL, citing a police spokesman, 36-year-old Benjamin Obadiah Foster died in a hospital Tuesday night after a protracted standoff with authorities in Grants Pass, Oregon.

reported KTVL that officers ended the standoff after they surrounded the house where they believed Foster was hiding and attempted to negotiate with the suspect. On Tuesday night, Grants Pass police released a statement saying Foster was “in custody” following the standoff, but gave no further information. The agency plans to hold a press conference on Wednesday.

When police arrived at a Grants Pass home on January 24 to investigate a report of a woman being beaten senseless, they found Foster, who they claimed was wanted for attempted murder, kidnapping and assault. Foster is charged with torturing the woman for the purpose of killing her, according to indictment documents filed by the prosecution.

The Grants Pass Police Chief said the victim was still in critical condition in hospital on Sunday. Hensman told CNN that Foster and his victim had a “prior relationship” before the attack. He just stated, “This was not a random attack”, without giving further context.

When police arrived on the scene last week, the suspect had already disappeared, so they launched a massive, multi-day hunt for him, using tips from the public and involving federal, state and local authorities. The police were warned to be careful when looking for Foster, because he was “extremely dangerous” and could be armed.

According to Hensman, he was “definitely a threat to others”, especially to anyone who tried to befriend him. Investigators have concluded that Foster received help from another person while evading authorities. They added that he may have used dating apps to identify new victims or call for help during his escape.

Officers found ‘disgusting scene’

Hensman told CNN encountered by the police “an absolutely disgusting scene,” when they arrived at a 911 call from a friend of the victim. He stated that the woman had been subjected to the alleged abuse for a “long time” prior to her discovery.

Describing the scene, the police chief said: “This will be etched in my memory for many years to come,” Clark County court records from Las Vegas indicate that at least two women who had relationships with Foster accused him of sexual assault and abuse.

An ex-girlfriend of Foster claimed he strangled her in a fit of rage in 2017 after discovering she had texted another man. According to the paperwork, Foster was arrested and charged with domestic violence.

During the arraignment of that case, he was charged with misdemeanor assault and kidnapping after his then-girlfriend informed police that he had strangled her many times and tied her up for most of a two-week period.

According to the Las Vegas police report, the woman was able to get away by telling Foster to run errands and then sneaking out of the store. According to the report, by the time she arrived at the hospital, she had suffered seven broken ribs, two black eyes, and abrasions to her wrists and ankles from being bound.

To resolve both charges, Foster entered plea deals. In the first case, he was credited with serving 729 days of a maximum sentence of 30 months.
