A Chihuahua mix in Ohio holds the Guinness World Record for the oldest living dog at 23 years old. Born December 7, 2022, Spike is about 9 inches tall and 12.9 pounds on December 7, 2022. Rita Kimball, its owner for over 13 years, first saw him in a grocery store parking lot in Camden, Ohio. It was speculated at the time that his age was 10.
“He was shaved on his back, had bloodstains around his neck from a chain or rope, and looked pretty rough,” Kimball told GWR. “The clerk at the grocery store told us he had been there three days and they were feeding him leftovers.”
Kimball claims that when she and her family exited the store and entered the parking lot, Spike followed them. Having no idea who he belonged to, she took him in and gave him shelter on her little farm.
The Chihuahua gets its name from a cartoon dog with the same characteristics: a large, hostile dog. Kimball claims that despite Spike’s short stature and affable nature, he possesses the temperament of a much larger dog.

A stranger petting him is the only time he shows chihuahua-like behavior, she says. He’s nice, but he can be irritable because he’s hard of hearing and nearly blind, she explained. Kimball believes her dog’s longevity can be attributed to his or her regular schedule, balanced diet, plenty of room to run around, regular exercise, and lots of affection.
She said Spike usually gets up between 7 and 7:30 in the morning and his morning routine may or may not include breakfast depending on his mood. He starts his day with a visit to the family’s barn, where he spends time with the cows, horses and barn cats before returning home for a nap on the porch.
During the warm summer months, Rita likes to take him on long walks in their rural community on weekends. She explained that after a busy week, they bathe Spike on a Saturday night and then they cut wood, clear rows of fences, bale hay, and harvest crops.
Kimball said that on rare occasions Spike ate braunschweiger with cheese for dinner and that on other occasions he ate his favorite French fries, Doritos. The house cat and sleeping are two of his favorite pastimes. He also likes to play hide and seek with his stuffed fox.
Kimball contacted Guinness World Records after discovering her dog was older than the previous record holder, Pebbles, after seeing her on an episode of Jimmy Fallon. Pebbles died in October 2022 at the age of 22.
“Most of our family knew Spike was old, but didn’t realize he had a shot at becoming the oldest in the world.” Kimbal said. “Now that he’s the record holder, they see him as a celebrity.”
