A Washington State University doctoral student, a 28-year-old Pullman resident, was detained Friday, according to a Moscow police press release. The student was wanted in connection with the deaths of four University of Idaho students on Nov. 13.
Pennsylvania State Police officers arrested Bryan Christopher Kohberger on four charges of first-degree murder and criminal burglary early one Friday morning in Pennsylvania’s Chestnuthill Township. An arrest warrant issued by the Idaho State Police led to his arrest.
Kohberger is suspected of the early morning stabbings of Xana Kerndodle, Ethan Chapin, Kaylee Goncalves and Madison Mogen at their King Road home in Moscow on Nov. 13. At a Friday afternoon press conference in Moscow, Moscow Police Chief James Fry and Latah Prosecutor Bill Thompson declined to comment on the circumstances surrounding Kohberger’s arrest in Pennsylvaniahis motivation or his relationship with the victims.
The court affidavit contains much of this material, but Thompson said it cannot be made public until Kohberger is in Latah County and the Idaho arrest warrant is served. After weeks of appealing leads related to the vehicle, the police suspect was near the King Road crime scene at the time of the murders. the agency did reveal that a white 2015 Hyundai Elantra had been discovered.
The murder weapon is still missing, Fry said. According to Thompson, Kohberger has already appeared in court for the first time in Pennsylvania, where he is being held without bail. He must return to a courtroom in Pennsylvania on Tuesday afternoon. If Kohberger chooses to voluntarily return to Idaho, he could avoid extradition. Latah County can request extradition through the Governor’s office if he does not waive it.
“If we do, it may take a while for him to get here, so again I ask for your patience and understand that this is just the way the system works,” said Thompson. Fry and Thompson both urged the public to continue to send reports to law enforcement with any information they may have on Kohberger.
“We are still looking for more information”, said Fry. “We’re still trying to build that image, just like we’ve been saying all along. We put all the pieces together and that will help. Fry claimed that the court’s order to halt cleaning of the King Road property has prevented the private company from proceeding with the cleaning.

WSU released a statement Friday saying that Kohberger’s office and residence, both of which are located on the WSU campus in Pullman, had been searched by the WSU police station in accordance with a search warrant. WSU announced earlier this month that Kohberger would complete his first semester as a Ph.D. criminal law student there.
Fry expressed his gratitude to the FBI and the Idaho State Police for assisting his agency with the investigation. He expressed his appreciation to the media for bringing the investigation to the attention and expressed his gratitude to the residents of the county for the more than 19,000 tips they had provided.
Nearly seven weeks have passed since the murders, during which time authorities have limited the amount of material made public to avoid tipping off the perpetrator and jeopardizing an upcoming criminal charge. “I am 100% behind the way we approached this investigation,” Fry said Friday.
Fry said he feels comfortable in the Moscow area, but residents should still exercise caution. At the press conference, UI President Scott Green expressed relief at the arrest. According to him, there has been a tidal wave of popular support in recent weeks.

“Kindness is contagious”, he said. “And it provided the light that recaptured territory lost to evil and darkness.” Green informed UI students and staff via email that Kohberger could not be found in the university’s database. He also said that the UI has expanded its security staff and that local law enforcement would step up patrols on campus and in surrounding areas.
Self-defense courses, vigilance training, stalker awareness seminars, seminars on maintaining healthy relationships, and distribution of other personal safety items will be on schedule. Moscow Mayor Art Bettge issued a statement praising the work of law enforcement. I just hope that today’s revelation of the suspect’s arrest will help people better understand what led up to the horrific act.
