It should be clear at this point that Michelle Yeoh is not only ageless, but also incapable of giving a below average performance. She turned 60 last August, but she still acts like the young woman who, after winning the Miss Malaysia title in 1983, became an action icon in Hong Kong in the mid-1980s.

Born on August 6, 1962 in Ipoh, Malaysia, Yeoh seemed to have already developed unparalleled cinematic martial arts before he ever left the womb.

However, she remained largely unknown on this side of the world until she entered “Bowing Tiger, Hidden Dragon” in 2000 and received a BAFTA Award nomination. She had been acting for 16 years when she immediately became a phenomenon thanks to filmmaker Ang Lee.

The majority of viewers may not be aware of the fact that Yeoh had no formal martial arts training and instead relied on her dancing skills and regular coaches to prepare for the intricate action sequences that became her trademark in films like “Yes, Madam!”, “Magnificent Warriors” and “Wing Chun”, Yeoh has eschewed recognition from the Oscars, Golden Globes and SAG Awards over a phenomenal career spanning nearly four decades.

But that may be about to change with Yeoh’s brilliant, critically acclaimed performance “everything everywhere at once”, which catapulted her into the conversation for major accolades following the film’s premiere at South By Southwest in March.

Everything everywhere at once (2022)

The film is basically everything A24 describes in its marketing materials: “a hilarious and grand sci-fi action adventure about an exhausted Chinese-American woman (Michelle Yeoh) who can’t seem to complete her taxes.” It’s outrageous, wild and delicious, unabashedly over the top.

It’s a masterful attack on the senses that grabs you by the eyes, ears and throat and doesn’t let go. It’s also a professional highlight for Yeoh, whose Evelyn Wang character is a laundromat owner who travels the multiverse and still has what it takes to kick it. Nothing, not even close, has ever been quite like this movie.

Crouched Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000)

Yeoh’s smoldering performance as Yu Shu Lien, Master Li Mu Bai’s (Yun-Fat) lover and devoted comrade, in this historical play set in China’s 19th century Qing dynasty made her one of “one of the another day’s sensation in America, even though she had been a star in Asia for 15 years by the time “Crouching Tiger” arrived.

The film is director Lee’s masterpiece, consisting of thrilling battle sequences and fantastic choreography that essentially reinvents the genre. It’s meaty and philosophical, artistic and bizarre, aggressive and fun. Again, Yeoh is a warrior’s warrior who is kind and fierce at the same time. The most incredible Oscar snub was hers.

Crazy Rich Asians (2018)

Yeoh stood out as a scene-stealing prodigy in this box office sensation, a comedy-drama romance that was well received by critics and viewers alike and was based on the book of the same name. It follows the story of Rachel (Wu), an economics professor at NYU, who travels to Singapore with her boyfriend Nick (Golding) for his best friend’s wedding.

There she is forced to eat by Nick’s wealthy family, including clawed tiger mother Eleanor (Yeoh), a bossy, strong matriarch who says what she means and does what she says. She is a ball of ferocious socialite passion and the ideal chess player on the “Crazy Rich Asians” board.

Super Agent (1992)

The action comedy/drama genre was unheard of thirty years ago. Chan was never better than in this chaotic kung fu movie, where he plays a Hong Kong police officer who goes undercover to infiltrate a Chinese prison. From there, he uses cunning, quirky charm to infiltrate a drug cartel at enormous risk to his safety.

Yeoh, who plays Jessica Yang, another undercover cop, gives him a lot of help. Of course, there are hilarious mix-ups and a whole lot of bone-crunching stunts that appear to have been performed by the actors. The final product is an eccentric genre gem that will give everyone a great time, including Yeoh.

The Lady (2011)

Yes, Michelle Yeoh can engage in politics and does so admirably and effectively. Yeoh displays a regal, stoic, and powerful presence as Aung San Sun Kyi, Burma’s political figurehead who earned the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize while imprisoned in her homeland, as her real persona fights for a cause bigger than herself .

The relationship between Kyi and Thewlis’ portrayal of her husband, Michael Aris, is portrayed in the film. Despite the great distances between them and the persecution of a belligerent Burmese government, their love remains. The actress played a very different role than she was used to, yet she served it with her trademark flair.

Kung Fu Panda 2 (2011)

The sequel to DreamWorks Animation’s “Kung Fu Panda” is a better movie than the first; it’s darker, more serious, and packs a bigger punch while retaining the humor and warmth of the original. With Black, Cham, Hoffman, Oldman, Yeoh, Liu, Rogen and Cross as the voice actors, it has an impressive voice ensemble.

Yeoh plays the Soothsayer, an old and wise goat gifted with the power of “second sight”, and Po (Black) is a Dragon Warrior trying to keep the Valley of Peace from falling into the clutches of evil. Although it is more complicated, as long as the Fortune Teller is there, we always feel great.

Tomorrow Never Dies (1997)

It’s a lot of fun and Brosnan proves himself to be an eminently capable James Bond. However, he has Yeoh on his side in the role of Chinese secret agent Wai Lin to help prevent Armageddon, which is why he comes across as believable. Indeed, Michelle Yeoh played a Bond girl, which makes perfect sense when you think about it. Pryce portrays the Murdoch-esque magnate with many moustache-twirling styles.

Sunshine (2007)

A stellar cast, led by Murphy, Byrne and Evans, with Yeoh following closely behind, supports Oscar-winning director Boyle’s psychological sci-fi thriller. She is one of eight men and women who traveled to space in 2057 to prevent the sun from setting and ending life as we know it on Earth.

She plays a biologist in this crew. It’s fair to say that things don’t quite go as planned, but Corazon, played by Yeoh, keeps her focus on the present and the task at hand. Nothing as simple as a fading ball of fire will now phase the actress, just as she never flinched when looking at rooms full of nasty dudes.

Shang-chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)

Simu Liu, who plays the main character Shang-Chi, receives helpful instructions from his aunt Ying Nan on how to be a badass just before Yeoh enters the Marvel Cinematic Universe (Yeoh).

She gets the chance to show that despite her almost 60 years of age, she still has what it takes to play the wise older character with absolute conviction. The fairly complicated plot revolves around Shang-need Chi’s confrontation with his history as he was lured into the Ten Rings movement. Awkwafina, who plays Shang-best Chi’s girlfriend Katy, a hotel clerk, adds flavor to the mix.

Tai Chi Master (1993)

Starring: Jet Li, Michelle Yeoh, Siu-Ho Chin, Fennie Yuen, Cheung-Yan Yuen, Shun Lau,

“Tai Chi Master” is the pinnacle of filmmaker Yuen’s career and is arguably the best pure action film of Yeoh’s career. While a showcase of star Li’s abilities, it also illustrates Yeoh’s superb agility in a dramatic setting (he is the martial arts choreographer of the films “Matrix” and “Kill Bill”).

The plot revolves around Li and Chin, two childhood friends who broke up but were eventually reunited through the power of Tai Chi. With some great fight scenes, this is portrayed as a seminal work in the martial arts genre, cementing Yeoh’s position as the queen of Hong Kong thriller.
