After a 2019 traffic altercation in Miami, Mexican actor Pablo Lyle beat a man to death, earning him a five-year prison sentence on Friday. The verdict came nearly four years after Lyle was charged with killing a man in a traffic accident by punching him.

The sentence was handed down two months after Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Marisa Tinkler Mendez rejected the actor’s plea for a new trial and upheld the jury’s guilty verdict. The 36-year-old Mexican telenovela star who starred in ‘Yankee’, a Netflix crime series, was given a 15-year prison sentence as the highest possible. In addition, the actor received 500 hours of community service, 500 hours of conflict resolution training and eight years of probation.

There is a 30-day appeal period for the actor. Lyle appeared calm and expressed remorse during the more than three-hour hearing while wearing a red prison uniform. He has been in custody since his conviction on October 4.

“I’m very sorry,” Lyle said in Spanish, looking at some members of the Hernández family who were in court, including his son.

“I always pray for him and you with all my heart.”

A six-member jury found Lyle guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Juan Ricardo Hernandez, 63, after a week’s trial. Hernández, who was unarmed, suffered severe head damage and died four days later while being treated at the hospital. His defense team argued that Lyle acted in self-defense. In addition, they claimed that the evidence from the trial was inconsistent.

However, the judge stated that Lyle had made a “bad decision” and acted “out of anger” in pronouncing her sentencing. Mr. Lyle’s action was violent, Tinkler stated. “Mr. Lyle must take responsibility for those actions.” Security cameras filmed the altercation along the road.

The actor, his wife and their two children were taken to the airport by Lyle’s brother-in-law. They drove past Hernández’s car, which stopped at a stop sign, got out and went to Lyle’s car to complain that they were blocking his path.

According to surveillance footage, Lyle punched Hernández in the face after the two argued. Lyle insisted he acted in self-defense. He claimed that Hernández had a gun and that his children were scared. Before the judge announced her verdict, Lyle’s wife, brother-in-law and sister testified at the hearing.

Hernández’s son spoke highly of him as a cheerful, friendly person with good morals. Juan Ricardo Hernandez Jr. requested that Lyle receive the maximum sentence of 15 years in prison. He claimed that he had been with his father the day before the altercation. Hernández’s son admitted that when he visited his father in hospital after learning of the incident,

“I didn’t want to believe it was him.”
