Syracuse legend and NBA player/coach Louis Orr has passed away. He played eight seasons in the NBA. He was 64. Orr’s family sent a statement through Georgetown on Friday confirming that he had died of pancreatic cancer on Thursday. During his time in Syracuse (1976-1980), Orr was instrumental in helping Orange reach the NCAA Tournament four times. He was named to the All-Big East team for the regular season and tournament as a senior. In 2015, he retired his No. 55 jersey.

“Louis Orr was the greatest man I had the pleasure of knowing” longtime Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim posted on social media. “He came into my life as my first recruit, became a fantastic coach and colleague – but most importantly he became a dear friend. I will cherish our years together. I send my love to his family and our Orange family.”

Sad about the loss of “an Orange icon” and “a player, a coach and above all a brilliant guy who has made everyone around him better”, The Syracuse men’s basketball team also issued a statement. When we see his No. 55 hanging in the Dome, we will always remember Louis Orr.

Playing career of Louis Orr

Louie was a high school basketball standout in the Cincinnati area, then played college hoops for Jim Boeheim in Syracuse for four years. Cuse’s draft class included Orr, who was picked by the Pacers in the second round of the NBA draft. Louis spent two years in Indiana.

When Orr moved to New York, he started playing professional basketball again and played six seasons for the Knicks. Louis’ teammate Patrick Ewing went on to play for and was coached by Louis at Georgetown. In the NBA, Orr averaged about 10 points and 4 rebounds per game.

Coaching career of Louis Orr

Louis began his coaching career in the early 1990s as an assistant, worked for JB at Xavier and Providence before returning to his alma school, Syracuse. Orr served as head coach for three different collegiate teams throughout his illustrious career. For the first time in his career, he had a chance at a top job in 2000 when he was hired as head coach of Italian club Siena.

In his freshman year, Siena had an amazing 20-11 record. After that, Orr became the head coach of Seton Hall. In the five years that followed, the Pirates won 80 games under Orr’s leadership and lost 69. He furthered his coaching career by accepting a position at Bowling Green State University. He would have the longest tenure of an offensive coordinator ever.

Orr spent the better part of a decade learning and growing at Bowling Green. From then until his departure, Orr helped steer the Falcons to an overall record of 101–121. Orr and Patrick Ewing, a former colleague of Orr’s with the New York Knicks, have been assistant coaches at Georgetown since 2017. His family, including Yvette, and their children Monica and Chauncey, are all still there.

Over the course of seven years, Orr had a 101-121 record and a 54-60 score in Mid-American Conference play. People from all over the neighborhood pay their respects. Former players, coaches and teammates have all expressed their grief at the loss of a great guy and a great coach; the basketball community as a whole mourns Orr’s departure.

“I am devastated to hear of Louis Orr’s demise. My first Syracuse recruit to the Knicks was as nice as any NBA player, and we send our condolences to his family,” wrote Rick Pitino.
