Gary was raised in Cincinnati alongside his six siblings by his parents, who worked hard to put food on the table and were occasionally unsuccessful – the family of nine lived in a trailer park in Oxford. Gary attended a local high school where he was physically active as he played both football and soccer, and after his matriculation exam, he joined the United States Navy where he stayed for six years and became Master-at-Arms. He started doing stand-up comedy when he was in the Navy and was dubbed “The Funniest Serviceman in America.” After leaving the Navy, he moved to San Diego where he continued to perform and won the Funniest Black Comedian in San Diego contest.
