Judges will decide whether Tory Lanez shot Megan Thee Stallion

Rapper Tory Lanez’s trial for shooting hip-hop artist Megan Thee Stallion in the foot began Thursday with jury deliberation. After hearing the remainder of the defense’s closing argument from the previous day and a brief rebuttal from Los Angeles County prosecutors, the jury of seven women and five men considered for a little over three hours.

They were unable to reach a decision on the three charges against the 30-year-old Canadian rapper and will return Friday to continue deliberations on those charges: firing a firearm with gross negligence; attack with a semi-automatic firearm; and carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle. Lanez, who has pleaded not guilty, faces up to 22 years in prison and deportation if found guilty of the charges.

Megan Thee Stallion, whose real name is Megan Pete and who is 27 years old, said that in the summer of 2020, when the two were traveling in an SUV in the Hollywood Hills, Lanez fired a gun at the back of her feet and screamed for her to dance. Bullet pieces had to be surgically removed from her feet. Prosecutors underscored her courage in testifying and the hostility she received as a result in their closing remarks. According to them, she has nothing to gain by lying.

In his closing argument, Lanez’s attorney claimed that Megan’s best friend at the time, Kelsey Harris, fired the bullets because she was jealous of Lanez and was trying to stop the shooting. Legal counsel George Mgdesyan claims Megan framed Lanez to make herself look better. As we’ve seen before, Harris has denied being the shooter and instead pointed the finger at Lanez. In an email, her lawyer flatly denied any wrongdoing on her part.

On Thursday, the jury requested that the evidence be read from the only non-participating witness to the shooting.. This witness was a man on an adjoining balcony who was with his children at the time of the incident, but who stated that he was not paying close attention for fear of them.

The defense called Sean Kelly as an expert witness, but he was eventually used by both sides. He claimed to have seen a woman’s muzzle flash, as well as a small man “shoot everywhere.” Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, released his first mixtape in 2009 and quickly rose to fame, which eventually led to albums being released on major record labels. Both of his most recent albums have charted in the top ten on Billboard.
