Jim Harbaugh fears Michigan Football NCAA misconduct allegations

According to Jim Harbaugh’s comments on Thursday afternoon, he will face a Level I violation of NCAA standards if he remains head coach of Michigan’s football team in 2023.

The Free Press reports that the NCAA will soon send a formal notice of impeachment to Michigan, accusing the program of four Level II violations (defined as “greater than minimal but less than substantial or extensive recruiting, competitive or other benefits” and Harbaugh with a Level I violation (“serious breach of conduct” that “seriously undermines or threatens the integrity of collegiality”).

The Free Press has learned that Harbaugh’s Level I offense is for deliberately lying to or misleading NCAA investigators and that the penalty for this offense may be a one game suspension or perhaps more games lost. The University of Michigan has the right to terminate Harbaugh’s contract for cause at any time during the term of the contract (until 2026). However, it wouldn’t happen before the NCAA‘s probe was over.

Since the Wolverines fell TCU in the College Football Playoff Semifinals on Saturday in the Fiesta Bowl, There is a lot of speculation about Harbaugh’s future. The Denver Broncos and the Carolina Panthers have both reportedly contacted him about a potential head coaching position. According to The Athletic, Harbaugh would accept a position in the NFL if given the chance.

Harbaugh interviewed for the head coaching position with the Minnesota Vikings last winter, but after being passed over for the position, he assured the Free Press that he would not leave Michigan until a national title was won.

Harbaugh issued a statement Thursday, about an hour before the Athletic’s initial disclosure of NCAA violations, reiterating his comments from last month that he plans to remain Michigan’s coach next season. But he also said he had some uncertainty about the future.
