There are no planned railway strikes for January 13, 14 or 15. As of this writingthe last scheduled strike day in the United Kingdom was Saturday 7 January. The Rail, Maritime, and Transport Union (RMT) has been on strike for 48 hours every day from December 1 to January 7. The first was from January 3 to 4 and the second is scheduled for January 6 to 7. Not to mention, the ASLEF union is going on strike on January 5.

More may be announced at any time

It is true that there will be no more planned strikes, but that does not mean that the strikes are over. Since the RMT has not yet agreed on an agreement for its members, more can be planned at any time. But unions must announce strikes at least 14 days in advance.

According to the RMT’s most recent report, the government has done just that “blocked” the union’s efforts to negotiate a contract with the railway industry’s employers. “Despite union efforts over the Christmas period, railway employers have not arranged formal negotiations with RMT to resolve the dispute,” they said.

“Both Network Rail and the Rail Delivery Group are directly blocked by ministers from making an acceptable proposal on job security, pay and working conditions.” The union’s general secretary, Mick Lynch, claimed that one “unprecedented level of ministerial interference”.

He stated that this dissuades train bosses from contracting and ending the issue. In December, Rishi Sunak declared that the unions should withdraw and call off the strikes.
