Bachelor in Paradise lists contestants who couldn’t find love The Bachelor and The Bachelorette another chance to find their soul mate on reality television. In Season 8 of Bachelor in Paradise, Michael Allio’s chances of matching with someone seemingly evaporated when Sierra Jackson left. Luckily Danielle Maltby stepped in to save the day.

Michael and Maltby bonded over the grief of losing loved ones: Allio’s wife, Laura, passed away in 2019; Danielle’s fiancé, Nick Haag, died in 2011. Allio said to Danielle:

“Sometimes like it [a connection] starts to feel real, the guards go up and you start looking for something, not reasons to make it fail, but you’re not going to approach it in the same open way you would before tragedy strikes our lives.

Nick Haag died of an overdose at the end of March 2011

Nick Haag died in late March 2011, three months after proposing to Danielle Maltby. Haag’s obituary stated that he died in the emergency room of Waukesha Memorial Hospital due to an overdose.

Danielle spoke about Haag’s death during her appearance on Nick Viall’s season of The Bachelor. Maltby said she tried to resuscitate Haag, but her efforts were in vain.

‘He overdosed on drugs and I found him’ Maltby told Viall. “I didn’t know he was addicted, so it was a complete shock.” According to reports, after Haag’s death, Danielle moved to Haag’s hometown of Nashville, Tennessee.

On the 10th anniversary of Hague’s death, Maltby wrote on Instagram that the death of her fiancé had plagued her for a month. She celebrated the person she had become despite never fully recovering from Haag’s death. Danielle gave advice to anyone grieving the loss of a loved one:

“It’s okay to be happy again. It’s okay to laugh, even if you feel bad at first. It’s okay to feel heavy when your song comes on the radio. It’s okay to cry in the shower and it’s okay to scream in your car. It’s okay to have new feelings, it’s okay to love new friends.”

“The one you lost wants you to be happy and they want you to be happy for you.”
