Gigantopithecus Ark: How to tame it, location… All about this creature

In Ark: Survival Evolved, the Gigantopithecus undoubtedly reminds of certain well-known mythological creatures, the Yeti or the Bigfoot to name a few. This rather rare bipedal creature, which takes the form of a rather imposing ape, is an excellent asset (especially in PvP) for the Survivors who manage to tame it. Herbivorous and relatively friendly, it’s not one to attack nearby creatures and players on the spot. In this guide, we explain the most important things you need to know about this creature.

Where can you find Gigantopithecus in Ark?

The Gigantopithecus is a Herbovir creature that mainly prefers rocky areas, often mountainous but not always. You can find it mostly on mountain cliffs, but also in caves and generally rocky areas of the island you are on. It is an exclusively terrestrial animal, an excellent swimmer, though it can drown if it has no air and cannot fly. He is recognizable from a distance as he takes the form of a rather large gorilla standing on two legs.

At first glance, the Gigantopithecus is not downright hostile. However, he has a strong character, which makes him openly hostile to anyone who comes close to him, so steer clear if you want to avoid trouble.

Peculiarities of Gigantopithecus in Ark

  • Fighter: In a single combat match, the Gigantopithecus can defeat many of the creatures present on the island, without necessarily also being able to compete with the largest theropods. Its main asset remains its ability to throw its rider away with the Right click (default), in addition to inflicting the secondary attack Anesthesia.
  • Cave explorer: Thanks to its relatively inconspicuous stature, the Gigantopithecus can be used as a mount in caves and other caverns, especially artifact cellars. Very handy, he can jump but also run, climb the walls and swim fast, he is a considerable asset, not to mention he is very good at fighting!
  • Collector: Not only can the Gigantopithecus carry relatively heavy loads, but it is also excellent at harvesting certain coveted items: fibres, Branches, Drink And Berries !
  • Aquatic Mountain: An excellent swimmer, the Gigantopithecus is a very good temporary aquatic mount. He can drown, so don’t forget to let him catch his breath, but his good swimming skills will easily allow him to flee from a predator that is not well suited to aquatic environments.

Taming: how do you tame the Gigantopithecus?

Taming a Gigantopithecus is particularly easy because it’s done passively: you must collect berries and feed them to the Gigantopithecus you desire. Be careful though, as he moves very erratically, you may accidentally touch him and thereby incur his wrath. If this happens, run away and calmly come back to feed him: touching him will not reset the taming!

  • Attention : Don’t try to tame a Gigantopithecus by being violent to it, even if only to it Arrows tranquilizers. It wouldn’t make sense unlike many other dinosaurs.

In terms of food, Herbivorous by nature, this creature especially loves Ordinary kibble and from mejobessen during taming.

Ordinary kibble

Regular kibble recipe:

– 1x Dried meat
1x Medium egg
5x fibres
2x But
2x Potato
– Water

→ 9 regular chunks required for level 150 Gigantopithecus

→ Time to tame it: ~21min51s

mejoberry

→ 81 Mejoberry required for level 150 Gigantopithecus

→ Time to tame it: ~1h50min44s

How to reproduce the Gigantopithecus?

Reproduction of Gigantopithecus requires the presence of a male and a female of this species in the same room.

Randomly and at a rate of one mating about every 18 to 48 hours, the female Gigantopithecus gives birth to a baby Gigantopithecus about 6 hours after mating. For this to happen, place the pair in the same paddock and select in their options “Allow mating“.

For the baby to survive, you must watch him closely for 4 hours and give him food adapted to this species in his inventory, otherwise he will not be able to eat. Once the baby Gigantopithecus is an adolescent, it will be able to feed on its own and will take about 3 days and 5 hours in total to reach its adult form.
