Flash season 8 ending explained: The eighth season of The Flash came to an unexpected end. Does this mean a certain character will return in Season 9?
Barry Allen and Team Flash have had a troubled Season 8 of The Flash. It started with a five-piece “Armageddon” crossover in which the alien Despero believed the Scarlet Speedster was about to bring about the end of the world, but Central City was at his mercy. He didn’t know that Reverse-Flash had engineered the whole plan.
However, defeating Despero and Reverse-Flash only created a greater threat to Team Flash. The Negative Forces emerged as a result of Thawne’s demise and sought revenge against Barry for wiping out the Negative Speed Force by exploiting Iris’ Time Sickness.
The Flash and the reborn Reverse-Flash, now possessing all the powers of the Negative Forces, engaged in a titanic battle at the climax of the event. When all was said and done, a vague uncertainty about the show’s future remained.

Is Flash Season 8 Teasing Eddie Thawne’s Return?
Barry Allen eventually defeated his nemesis in the season finale“Negative, Part Two”, which ended the inverted tyranny. However, Flash’s climax scene of the episode also made it clear that the Negative Forces had not been defeated and that they would likely choose a new avatar in the end.
Speaking of time jumps, the conclusion showed a blue crystal that started shining in 2049 when Barry and Iris voiced a discussion about the new avatar. Does this foreshadow the introduction of a new Speedster capable of Negative Speed Force in Season 9?
Cobalt Blue, a fictional character from DC Comics, Barry Allen’s long-lost twin brother, Malcolm Thawne, is a character that fans often associate with the color blue. In the comics, Malcolm eventually controls the Blue Flame by using a powerful blue locket, as he is bitter that his brother had a happier life than him.
While Malcolm does not appear in The Flash, there has long been a fan idea that Eddie Thawne would return as another Malcolm. Eddie, played by Rick Cosnett, made regular appearances in Season 1. He eventually gave himself up for Iris after realizing he was an ancestor of Eobard Thawne, hoping his passing would banish the villainous speedster from history.

It’s possible that if he came back in time and got corrupted by the Negative Speed Force, he’d become enraged and jealous upon learning that Iris had married Barry, essentially doing most of the comic book arc of Cobalt Blue again.
The end of Season 8 of Flash explained
With the second episode of its epic finale, Negative Part Two, The Flash concluded its eighth season. Iris, played by Candice Patton, was discovered alive in the final episode after dying in Negative Part One. Iris discovered she had the ability to escape the Time Stone while trapped inside, and she eventually did.
Meanwhile, Tom Cavanagh’s Eobard Thawne/Reverse-Flash gained excessive power as the new avatar of the Negative Forces. Grant Gustin’s The Flash and Thawne got into a fight as chaos erupted all around them, but just when Barry thought the battle was about to end in disaster, Iris showed it and warned him otherwise.
Barry dropped down and began to meditate after she told him there was another way to save the day, enraging Thawne. Thawne drew extra strength from the negative forces, but he was overpowered by them, causing him to self-destruct and die. After that, Thawne completely disappeared from the timeline.
Despite Thawne’s repeated deaths throughout the DC series, showrunner Eric Wallace revealed in an interview with TV line that Thawne’s death was real. Not this time. No resurrections.
“When we were writing the Season 8 finale, we thought this was the series finale. So we were like, ‘We’ve got to have the biggest, most epic fight ever between Grant and Tom! That’s how it should end. And after the script was done and we were getting ready to start prep, we got the news that we were going to get a ninth season,” Wallace said.
“So we were like, ‘Oh shit, we just fought the ultimate battle. How are we ever supposed to top that? Then it was like, ‘Let’s just kill him now and worry about that later.’ Because Reverse-Flash and the Negative Reverse-Flash, like Frost, are dead, I mean, they’re dead.”
Wallace is adamant that this death is final this time, but he doesn’t completely rule out Cavanagh appearing in The Flash.
“It’s a comic book show and I’m pretty sure in season 9 there’s a reason you could see Tom Cavanagh again. I won’t get into it, but that’s a pretty safe bet,” he said.
A bright blue crystal in a lab in the year 2049 was featured in the final shot of the season eight finale, which ended with a terrifying cliffhanger. Some comics fans familiar with the source material may understand what this entails, but others may have to speculate about what this is and what this scenario means for the show’s future.

“The hardcore comic fans know what’s coming. Those who don’t, I’m not spoiling it here, so it’s going to be a big surprise to them. Wallace said. “But yeah, we’re taking straight out of the comic books here, and boy will it be fun.”
Will Rick Cosnett return as Eddie Thawne in Season 9 of The Flash?
The likelihood that Rick Cosnett could return in season 9 of The Flash only reinforces this idea. It was revealed that he might reprise his role for additional episodes in the ninth season after doing so three episodes into season 8 (through flashbacks and a Deathstrom mourning phantom).
It’s unlikely that his expected return in Season 9 would have anything to do with that, since the Deathstorm arc has ended and the flashback episode was a one-shot. In light of this, could Cosnett’s rendition of Cobalt Blue finally confirm the long-held fan theory? All we can do is wait.
