Johnson was found dead in a hotel room in Raleigh, North Carolina, on July 17, a day after his wife reported him missing. Before the ME report came out this week, no one knew what caused the death.

According to USA todaythe documents show that officials said Johnson had oxycodone, hydrocodone and mirtazapine in his body at the time of his death, even though he had no active prescriptions for these drugs.

The outlet had previously said that the former NFL wide receiver said he was handicapped by his time in the league. After being selected in the first round of the NFL draft in 1994, Johnson played for the Steelers, Eagles, Patriots and Bills over the course of nine years.
