Emily the Criminal Ending Explained: What Happens at the End of This Movie?

Emily the criminal is one 2022 American crime thriller written and directed in feature debut by John Patton Ford. Aubrey Plaza, Theo Rossi, Megalyn Echikun woke upand Gina Gerson star in it.

Vertical Entertainment and Roadside Attractions released it in the United States August 12, 2022, after premiering at the Sundance Film Festival on January 24, 2022.

Emily the Criminal Plot synopsis

We meet our protagonist, Emily (Plaza), in the middle of a job interview. In a masterfully efficient opening scene, we learn that she needs 1). money to pay off her high student loans, 2) has an assault charge on her record, and 3) has a short temper.

Emily’s part-time job at a catering company does not cut so when a co-worker calls a quick $200 a “dummy shopper,” she jumps at the chance.

Emily discovers that being a dummy shopper means being a flat screen TV with a stolen credit card. This first job is a success. Emily buys a television and delivers it to the criminal organization running the scam and collects $200. When Youcef (Theo Rossi), one of the scam’s leaders, invites her to do another bigger job the next day, she accepts.

This time she has to buy a car with a stolen credit card. Youcef warns her that she only has eight minutes left car dealer drives her credit card before the bank contacts the card owner. She only has eight minutes to get out. Emily almost doesn’t make it, but after a physical altercation with the dealer, she narrowly escapes by car.

Youcef, feeling guilty about the failed job, helps Emily tend to her wounds after the altercation. Emily is one aspiring artist, and Youcef aspires to own its own rental properties. Emily persuades Youcef to let her in on the scam.

He teaches her how to make her own fake credit cards using stolen numbers. He also lays down ground rules like never buying from the same store twice and never meeting customers at your home.

After Emily persuades Youcef confront his cousin Khalil (Jonathan Avigdori) on cleaning the fraudsters’ money and emptying their shared business account, Youcef is attacked and injured.

Khalil tries to kill Emily, but she know how to stab pinned him to the floor. Khalil denies stealing money from the accounts as she threatens him.

Emily presses on, urging inform Khalil her that there is some cash in the fridge (it is unclear if this is the money he may have stolen from Youcef).

Emily takes the money bag and leaves with an injured Youcef bleeding from his wound. Emily panics when she hear police sirens while in his car, unable to find the keys, decides to take the money and leave Youcef behind.

The next day, the police raid her apartment discover she has disappeared. It is unknown whether Youcef or Khalil survived.

Emily explained the criminal ending

Emily and Youcef devise a strategy to confront Khalil in his safe house, where he is surrounded by other members of the fraud ring. The strategy fails. Khalil attacks Youcef, causing severe head injuries.

Emily uses a box cutter to restrain Khalil and force him to tell her where the money is. Emily flees with the money and helps Youcef get into his car. But despite the fact that he is alive, he is drunk to say they where the keys are. Emily hears the police approach and take the money before fleeing, leaving Youcef unconscious in the car.

We see a shot of the police breaking into Emily’s house, but Emily is nowhere to be seen. She’s having the time of her life in one unknown South American country. In the final scene, Emily delivers the same fraud story she first heard from Youcef, but in Spanish.

It is implied that she started one new life in South America as the leader of a new fraud gang and will never return to her former life. Emily the criminal she really is!
