After just one season, Netflix has decided to end the mystery thriller series 1899. At the Tudum fan event in September, the streamer unveiled its latest original series, 1899, which follows a group of travelers crossing the Atlantic.
On November 17, the first season of 1899 was released on Netflix. The first season contained eight episodes. Co-showrunners Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese stated on social media that season 2 of 1899 would not take place.
Despite Netflix’s controversial decision to end the show, another network or streaming provider could potentially pick it up and continue with the genre-bending mystery-horror thriller.

What is Netflix’s 1899?
Several families from Europe left London for New York in 1899. But things take a turn when they encounter another migrant ship in distress in the wide ocean.

“There’s a lot in the DNA that’s kind of similar to Dark in terms of the puzzle and wanting an engaged, active audience,” Friese told Entertainment Weekly. “Other aspects, however, are strikingly different, not only in terms of atmosphere and tone, but also in terms of pace and the presence of more action.
Therefore, it is nothing like Dark at all, but it does have some of the same maybe processes. As long as it’s still exactly what Dark fans want to see, it should feel like a breath of fresh air.”
“We definitely like to experiment with genres and expectations,” Odar said. Every detail is important, so I recommend keeping a close eye on everything. Both Odar and Friese said that 1899 is too long to read in one go.
Similar to how Friese organized Dark for three seasons, this new show will also focus on a mysterious riddle. “The way we went about production and the way Season 1 wraps up, you kind of want to have another one, although of course it depends on the viewership of the show.
That happens, I hope, eventually. That’s the idea we’ve outlined, and now we’ll find out if the rest of the world agrees with us.”
