Disney’s ‘Strange World’ is getting a gay character

In Disney’s Strange World, we meet the Clade family and immediately learn that they are unsung heroes. In their hometown of Avalonia, this family has made a name for itself as pioneers in more ways than one. Each of the characters reveals a facet of humanity that rarely gets screen time, but is essential.

This is a comedy to be sure, but it’s also about family secrets, both old and new, and about what can and can’t be forgiven. There are both big (saving a community) and small (saving someone’s life) heroic deeds in this story (like saving yourself).

Ethan Clade, voiced by Twitter comedian Jaboukie Young-White, plays a pivotal role in this action-packed tale of a brave family. Like the Clade family, Jaboukie breaks new ground with the introduction of Ethan, the first openly gay Disney character. Here’s what we know about his travels so far.

We finally get an openly gay character in Disney’s “Strange World.”

The title, “Strange World”, has a lot of meaning, just like this moving animated film. The story spans several generations and shows how someone can make their presence felt in different ways (physically, cognitively, emotionally and spiritually).

Farmer Searcher Clade (Jake Gyllenhaal) is at the heart of the plot. His father, a famous explorer, disappeared when Searcher was a young boy, and he has struggled ever since to make a name for himself and escape his father’s shadow.

Searcher’s son Ethan, who is 16 years old, shares his father’s desire for self-discovery. Like his famous but unknowable grandfather, he longs for a life beyond his father’s farm. Ethan embarks on a journey of self-discovery, but like any normal teenager, in his absence he must deal with the complications of a crush on a teenager: a boy named Diazo.

Jaboukie, who only recently revealed his sexual orientation to the public, discussed his LGBTQ+ community activism and the significance of his portrayal of Ethan in an interview with Yahoo. “It’s not a story about him coming out or struggling to be accepted in his sexual orientation.

Just Ethan growing into his own unique person within an environment willing to welcome and encourage him “As Jaboukie put it. It’s fantastic to see a character like Ethan in a Disney movie where the emphasis is on representation. I wish I could have seen this when I was younger Jaboukie told the press. “It’s nice to think that I had a hand in that before someone else.”

What else have we seen Jaboukie Young-White in?

Jaboukie Young-White shows a side of himself to The Washington Post not often seen on social media as he discusses his new movie Dating and New York. Jaboukie plays the straight man in the romantic comedy Dating and New York.

For a 27-year-old who likes romantic comedies, this wasn’t too much trouble. Movies like “500 Days of Summer” and “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” (which, realistically, are more breakup movies than romance) are among his favorites.

Jaboukie’s Twitter feed is a delirious mess, but it’s also what propelled him into the public consciousness. It landed him roles as a journalist on The Daily Show and as a writer Nick Krol’s Big Mouth, not to mention starring in Issa Rae’s Rap sh!t. Even before 30 joins the conversation, this is all wrapped up. Nevertheless, Twitter was the original catalyst.

Jaboukie Young-White’s relationship with Twitter isn’t what it once was

Sure, Jaboukie’s recent tweets promote Bizarre World, but a long, odd walk down his timeline will leave you gasping for joy and sometimes fear (in a good way). He has an almost flawless sense of humor that is open, honest and occasionally biting.

In light of his newfound fame, Jaboukie told W Magazine that his online persona has undergone a similar transformation. “I’m getting close to the point where I’ve spent more years on social media than I haven’t been on social media,” he said.

If you’re completely honest with yourself, it will be a fascinating thing to think about in the future. (Jaboukie is undoubtedly the most truthful person in his own business.) It could be argued that Jaboukie owes at least part of his success to Twitter, but he is in no way dependent on the platform. “It kind of corrupts your brain,” he told W.

Given Twitter’s rapid decline, he may not even have to leave voluntarily. But for now, you might see it in Strange World, in theaters on November 23, and on Disney Plus before the year is out.
