Farewell to a beloved oasis: Big Gay Ice Cream is closing its doors

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the closing of the iconic Big Gay Ice Cream at 125 East 7th Street. This much-loved frozen food store has been a fixture in the city since it opened in 2009, honoring the hit TV show “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.” The store closed in March 2020, shortly after COVID-19 began to negatively impact the city. Big Gay Ice Cream provided a safe environment for the city’s LGBTQ+ community, and its closure was felt throughout the city. This popular ice cream parlour was more than just a place to get a delicious scoop of ice cream; it was also a meeting place for people to come together and express themselves. As a result, it serves as a stark reminder of how much the pandemic has claimed our community and how much more damage it will do in the long run.

Big Gay Ice Cream is an ice cream parlor based in New York City, with several locations across the US. It is known for its innovative and unique flavors such as the Salty Pimp, the Bea Arthur and the Rocky Roadhouse. In early 2020, Big Gay Ice Cream had to temporarily close all of its stores due to the pandemic. Despite the setback, the company shifted its focus to e-commerce, offering direct-to-consumer delivery and pick-up service for its signature ice cream flavors. Big Gay Ice Cream also partnered with other local businesses to create new products, such as ice cream sandwiches, to support local economies. In 2021, Big Gay Ice Cream reopened some of its stores and provided customers with a safe and hygienic environment to enjoy their favorite ice cream flavors.

The Lasting Legacy of Big Gay Ice Cream

Due to the devastating effects of rising rents and the COVID-19 pandemic, Big Gay Ice Cream, an iconic ice cream shop, has closed its doors, marking the end of an era in ice cream history. Big Gay Ice Cream has become a household name in the country and has been providing fun and delicious treats to cities across the country for years. According to the Facebook page, the store was empty at the time of closing as many other large businesses had closed. This isn’t what it is. Big Gay Ice Cream is aptly named in honor of the company’s founders, who came from a socially conscious community. When it first appeared on television in the 1980s, the original Big Gay Ice Cream Truck seemed to pay homage to “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy,” but the name stuck. The Big Gay Ice Cream Company has left a lasting legacy by giving people a sense of joy, happiness and above all good ice cream, despite their brand being discontinued. The company has inspired others by creating delicious flavors and a unique twist on traditional ice cream. Our company is honoring their legacy and we look forward to seeing the ice cream industry continue to grow and bring joy to people around the world.
