It is with a heavy heart that we announce the closing of the iconic Big Gay Ice Cream at 125 East 7th Street. This much-loved frozen food store has been a fixture in the city since it opened in 2009, honoring the hit TV show “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.” The store closed in March 2020, shortly after COVID-19 began to negatively impact the city. Big Gay Ice Cream provided a safe environment for the city’s LGBTQ+ community, and its closure was felt throughout the city. This popular ice cream parlour was more than just a place to get a delicious scoop of ice cream; it was also a meeting place for people to come together and express themselves. As a result, it serves as a stark reminder of how much the pandemic has claimed our community and how much more damage it will do in the long run.

We didn’t know what to call the truck, so I decided to call it “The Big Gay Ice Cream Truck”. We felt like we were having a mid-90s conversation with an ice cream truck as part of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.
Big Gay Ice Cream closed
Big Gay Ice Cream, which started as a trucking company, operates two locations in New York City, one in Madison Square Garden and one in South Street Seaport. The Upper West Side store will remain open, but will close its East Village location in early 2021, after serving customers there for more than a decade.
