According to Anna Kendrick, who plays Alice in the new movie Alice, Darling, her own personal experience of emotional abuse in a love relationship led her to see the movie. The former member of Pitch Perfect recently discussed her new project with The Los Angeles Times, in which she portrays Alice, a woman in a toxic relationship with the mentally abusive Simon (Charlie Carrick).

Kendrick reflected on her own relationship with an unknown ex after seeing the Mary Nighy-directed, Alanna Francis-written picture. Kendrick said her boyfriend never physically harmed her, prompting her to reevaluate her feelings about the union.

“That was a big part of my problem,” Kendrick explained. “He never hit me and I’m not really afraid that he’s going to hit me. How do I distinguish normal conflict and abuse? Why is my body so scared all the time? Why do I wake up feeling like he’s in bed next to me and wondering, ‘OK, do I have 30 seconds before I start performing or…?’”

A major creative choice by the Up in the Air star was to use Alice’s experience as theproofthat Simon was insulting rather than showing himself behaving monstrously on stage. In a scene where Alice undressed revealing bruises, it was cut.

“I begged Mary, ‘Can Alice be the proof?'” Kendrick said. “Because not only do I want us not to make a movie that’s already been made, but I personally have to trust that I’m the proof. Part of it was like, if you can’t trust Alice, then I can’t trust myself either. So it was really, really important that the movie leaned so heavily on just staying with Alice.

Kendrick has discussed her past romance in the past. Kendrick revealed this in an interview with People in September, saying Francis’s script was provided to her because it reflected the discussions she and her agent were having about Kendrick’s personal relationship.

“It felt really strange because, to be honest, I’d seen a lot of movies about abusive or toxic relationships, and it wasn’t really like what was happening to me,” she said. “It sort of helped me normalize and minimize what was happening to me because I thought, ‘Well, if I was in an abusive relationship, it would look like this.'” She said that during that time she put more trust in her partner than in herself.

“If that person tells you that you have a distorted sense of reality and that you’re impossible and that all the things you think are happening aren’t happening, your life gets very confusing very quickly,” Kendrick explained. “And I was in a situation where at the end I had the unique experience of finding out that everything I thought was going on was actually going on. So I had a kind of feeling and recovery springboard that a lot of people don’t get.
