Adult Swim has cut ties with Justin Roiland since his domestic violence arrest

After learning that the co-creator of Rick and Morty had been arrested for misdemeanor domestic violence in Orange County, Adult Swim broke off relations with Justin Roiland. “Adult Swim has ended its partnership with Justin Roiland”, Adult Swim/Cartoon Network/Boomerang senior VP of communications Marie Moore said in a statement Tuesday.

Roiland co-created and produced the adult animated comedy Rick and Morty, which is distributed by Adult Swim. Roiland also voices the title characters, Rick and Morty. It has been revealed by The Hollywood Reporter on Jan. 17 that Adult Swim is just halfway through a massive 70-episode order for the program, one of the brand’s most popular titles, commissioned by the channel in 2018.

Rick and Morty will reportedly continue with other voice actors taking over from Roiland. While Dan Harmon is now sole showrunner, Roiland will always be credited as a co-creator. The program is guaranteed up to and including season 10. Roiland continues to work with Hulu on several fronts; he co-created and voiced a prominent character in the series Solar Opposites (the show was renewed for a fifth season in October).

Koala Man, created by Roiland and premiering on the platform on January 9, features his voice work and he serves as an executive producer on the project. Roiland is also still under contract with 20th Television Animation, the studio responsible for his previous shows Solar Opposites and Koala Man.

on January 12 NBC News was the first to report that Roiland had been charged with one count of domestic misconduct involving bodily harm and one count of false imprisonment by threat, violence, fraud or deceit in Orange County in connection with an alleged 2020 incident involving a Jane Doe with whom he was involved at the time. Roiland entered a not guilty plea and was released in 2020 after posting $50,000 bail. Roiland is due to appear in court again on April 27 after many preliminary hearings have already taken place.

Roiland’s attorney, T. Edward Welbourn, issued a statement earlier this month calling media reports of the case inaccurate. Further clarifying, Welbourn said:

“To be clear, Justin is not only innocent, but we have every expectation that this case is on track to be dropped once the district attorney’s office completes its methodical review of the evidence.”
