Charles Kimbrough died on January 11 in Culver City, California. He was nominated for a Tony and an Emmy and played an outright news anchor opposite Candice Bergen on “Murphy Brown”. He was 86 years old.

Between 1988 and 1998, Kimbrough played journalist Jim Dial on the popular CBS sitcom “Murphy Brown”. In 1990, he was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. In the 2018 remake, he played the same character for three episodes.

His death was first reported by The New York Times, and his son and agents confirmed it to The Associated Press on Sunday. The talent agency that worked with Kimbrough said, “Whether on stage or in front of the camera, he was a joy to watch.”

The actor died of natural causes in a hospital, the company said.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Beth Howland played waitress Vera on the CBS sitcom “Alice”. He died in 2016. They married in 2002, more than a decade after his first wife, Mary Jane (Wilson) Kimbrough, who died in 2007, left him.

SMS Talent said Kimbrough is survived by his sister Linda Kimbrough, son John Kimbrough, stepdaughter Holly Howland and granddaughter Cody.

Born on May 23, 1936, Kimbrough worked for many years in the New York theater scene. In 1971, he won a Tony Award for his role in the Steven Sondheim musical ‘Company’ on Broadway.

Kimbrough also voiced a gargoyle named Victor in Disney’s animated movie “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”.
