Ron Menor was a politician in Hawaii for a long time. He died at the age of 67. On Tuesday night, Governor Josh Green said Menor had passed away on Monday.

“Late this afternoon we were informed by Pat Menor, wife of Ron Menor, that our dear friend and former colleague passed away suddenly on Monday due to an unexpected medical emergency,” Green said in a statement Tuesday.

Menor served on the Honolulu City Council, Senate and House of Representatives. From 1982 to 2008, he served in the state legislature. He served on the city council from 2013 to 2021. Sherry Menor-McNamara, president and CEO of the Hawaii Chamber of Commerce, said many people will miss Menor very much.

“My cousin, Ron, was really committed to public service and wanted nothing more than to make Hawaii a better place to live. He inspired my quest for public office because of his unwavering passion for serving others.” Menor-McNamara said in a statement.

“He was someone I looked up to since I was a little kid. He will be sorely missed by his family, friends and the many people he represented so well.”

Menor’s most recent candidacy was in 2022 when he ran for the District 8 seat on the City Council. He and councillor Val Okimotowho ultimately emerged victorious, both made it to the general election after 32.4% and 34% of the votes cast in the August primary.

Menor lost the general election in November. During his last campaign, Menor focused on issues related to ‘quality of life’. He wanted to repair the city’s roads and sidewalks, and he worked to make sure motorists and pedestrians were safe. He also liked the idea of ​​providing people with more affordable housing options.

In an interview with the Honolulu Star-Livestream Advertiser’s show “Spotlight Hawaii” in October, he said he wanted to fill the open positions in the Honolulu Police Department. He said that as a politician with a lot of experience, he would be able to solve these problems.

As a politician, he worked for the people of Mililani, Waipio, Wahiawa, Waipahu and Pearl City. He served as the head of several committees on the Honolulu City Council, such as the Zoning, Planning and Housing Committee and the Executive and Legal Affairs Committee.

At one point he was also the head of the entire Council. He had even considered running for mayor of Honolulu in 2020. “Jaime and I send our love to Patty and the Menor ohana,” said Green. “We fondly remember Ron’s passionate service to the people of Hawaii during the many years he served in the Honolulu Legislature and City Council.”

Menor was a lawyer and served as Deputy Attorney General of the state. He received his degrees from Georgetown University Law Center, the University of California, Los Angeles and the Iolani School.

Hilo is where Menor was born. He has been a member of a number of community groups, including the Mililani Lions Club, the National Federation of Filipino American Associations, and the Board of Directors of the West Oahu YMCA. He married Patricia Menor, a teacher at Helemano Elementary School, and they had three sons.
