Police have arrested a six-year-old boy after he allegedly shot a teacher in the US state of Virginia. Chief Steve Drew said the the shooting happened at Richneck Elementary School in the City of Newport News just after 2:00 PM local time (7:00 PM GMT).

It’s not clear how the child got the gun, but Mr. Drew said it wasn’t “random shooting.” The teacher, whose name is unknown but believed to be in her thirties, was injured so badly that she could die.

She was taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors are closely monitoring her. After the two got into an argument, the incident happened in a first grade classroom (ages 6-7).

But Mr. Drew stressed that the shooting was an isolated event and that the police “I didn’t have a situation where someone was running around the school to shoot.”

Officials said the school, which has about 550 students, had metal detectors but not every child was checked. Police would not say what weapon the boy used, but they said it was a gun.

The head of the school district, Dr. George Parker, said officials would “look at any instance that may have occurred that could have caused this incident”.

Take a look at:

“This is terrible, something like this should never happen,” Dr. parker added. “We want to make sure something like this doesn’t happen again.” He said the school would be closed on Monday and promised students and parents would receive help to process what had happened.

Mayor Phillip Jones, who was elected just three days before the shooting, said yes “a dark day for Newport News.” “We will learn from this and come back stronger,” he told reporters.

Glen Youngkinthe governor of Virginia, said he had offered help to local officials and his administration had “ready to help where we can.”

“I will continue to monitor the situation and pray for the continued safety of all students and the community.” he wrote on Twitter.
