Authorities in Romania have verified that controversial online influencer and misogynist Andrew Tate has been arrested on suspicion of human trafficking, rape and gang organizing.
The former kickboxer and reality TV personality, banned from social networking sites for hate speech and misogynistic comments, was taken into custody along with his brother and two other suspects.
They were detained Thursday evening and could remain there for up to 24 hours, prosecutors from Romania’s anti-organized crime unit said.
Authorities released video from one of the searches, which showed riot police entering a lavish property, and claimed they searched five properties as part of the investigation. Stacks of euro banknotes and a revolver were visible on images of seized goods at the scene.
In a statement, authorities said two British citizens and two Romanians were accused of forming a gang that recruited victims by “misrepresenting their intention to enter into a marriage/cohabitation relationship and the existence of sincere feelings of love”. to propose”.
