Sonic the Hedgehog’s producer Takashi Iizuka promised more material for fans in 2023. As reported by Video Games Chronicle, Iizuka spoke about the franchise’s busy year across multiple mediums, including the releases of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic Origins, Sonic Frontiers, and the Sonic Prime series on Netflix.

But Sonic doesn’t slow down at all. We have a second wave planned for this year that will surprise and excite fans, and it will help us keep the momentum going,” said Iizuka. More content for Sonic Frontiers is on the way and we’ve already announced its release.

Sonic the Hedgehog had an eventful year

It’s uncertain whether the second wave will include LEGO’s intended release of five Sonic the Hedgehog kits in 2023. According to the leak, sets will cost between $29.99 and $99.99 and have a variety of piece counts, starting at 292 and going up to 802 for the most expensive item.

Products are supposedly section-based sets, so customers can buy all five to put the parts together into a complete scenario. According to the reports, the five LEGO sets will debut on August 1, 2023. Sega unveiled Sonic’s Holiday Cheer Suit in Sonic Frontiers for the Christmas season. In addition, the video game business unveiled a “roadmap for 2023 content in three updates.”

Juke Box, Photo Mode, revised challenge modes, Sonic’s Birthday, an open zone challenge, a new character named Koco, more playable characters and more story content are among the upcoming improvements.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will debut on December 20, 2024, according to Paramount Pictures, which also confirmed other holiday-themed release dates. Following the success of the first two live-action Sonic films, Paramount previously approved the third Sonic film and a spin-off series starring Knuckles (Idris Elba).

After fans urged them to remodel “Ugly Sonic” in a less gruesome version of the iconic character, the animation team’s path wasn’t always easy. The Sonic franchise started trending on social media following the arrests of co-creator Yuji Naka, in addition to a hectic release schedule. Authorities arrested Naka on December 7 and charged the video game programmer with insider trading.

Before the official release of the mobile battle royale game Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier, which was discontinued in October 2022 after just one year, Naka was reported to have spent 144.7 million yen, or approximately $1 million, for 120,000 shares in ATeam Entertainment.

Earlier, the Tokyo Prosecutor’s Office investigated Square Enix’s Dragon Quest Tact smartphone game and found evidence of insider trading. Similar to Naka’s second offense, the co-creator invested $20,000 in 10,000 shares of Aiming for 2.8 million yen before the mobile game developer announced it.

Naka joined Square Enix in 2016 and oversaw the creation of Balance Wonderlandone of the worst rated video games of 2021. Sonic Frontiers is playable on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch and Windows.
