Sam Burgess Former NRL star detained after failing drug test

Sam Burgess was arrested after failing a random drug test. He used to play in the NRL. 7NEWS was told by NSW Police Burgess was apprehended in Kingsford on Thursday morning for a random test, which came back positive.

The 34-year-old man was taken into custody and taken to Marboura police station for further investigation. Before they can file a report, the police are waiting for the results.

Police say Burgess should not have been driving because his driver’s license was suspended. Last February, highway patrol caught him driving an unregistered car while high on cocaine. He pleaded guilty to the charge and agreed to pay a fine.

He had to pay a fine, sign a pledge to be good and go to a program for people who break the traffic rules. There was no record of a conviction. In February, Burgess will go to court about this new event.

Samuel Burgess was born in England on December 14, 1988. He played as a loose striker, prop or second-row striker for a professional team in the 2000s and 2010s. He played for the Bradford Bulls in England’s Super League and for the Rabbitohs in South Sydney in Australia’s NRL.

The Rabbitohs won the 2014 NRL Premiership, the team’s first in 43 years. Burgess was named man of the match in the Grand Final, winning the Clive Churchill Medal. Internationally, he played for both Great Britain and England.

At the end of 2014, Burgess switched from playing rugby league to rugby union for Bath. He was called up to the England national team in August 2015, making him an international in both rugby union and rugby league.

He was part of the England team for the 2015 Rugby Union World Cup, which they lost, and then went back to rugby league for the 2016 NRL season. Burgess said he retired on 30 October 2019 as he injured his shoulder hurt. The South Sydney Rabbitohs have hired Burgess as an assistant coach.
