Dannielynn Birkhead, the daughter of Anna Nicole Smith, turned 16 on Wednesday. Larry Birkhead, her father, posted a message on Instagram to commemorate his daughter’s significant birthday.
“Sixteen years ago my beautiful baby was born. That’s if you want to feel old. A lot of people thought the odds were stacked against you, but maybe that was aimed more at me than you. Through tragedy, turmoil and a few baby tantrums – today you shine brightly and are so successful. So proud to be your father!” began his caption, next to a collage of photos of Dannielynn.
“When I told Dannielynn what a great baby she was when she was born, she snapped back in true Dannielynn style… ‘How do you know you weren’t even there?’ Ouch I told her, “maybe not, but I’ve been there every day since I brought you home.” It’s been a wild ride and Dannielynn has brought joy and laughter to my life. Stay off the local roads, because Dannielynn is 16! Happy birthday. Stone. Up,” He wrote.
“Mommy looks down,” Birkhead closed his caption and added an angel emoji.
Shortly after Smith’s death, a public custody dispute arose, and Birkhead was forced to establish Dannielynn’s paternity. According to the New York Times, Howard K. Stern, Smith’s former attorney, was identified on the birth certificate as Dannielynn’s father and had battled for custody. The wife of the actor Zsa Zsa Gabor, Frederic van Anhalt, had also claimed paternity for Dannielynn.
The father-daughter team often spends a lot of time together and bond through their shared admiration for Janet Jackson. Dannielynn and Larry saw Jackson perform in Cincinnati, Ohio, in July. After the show, the two got to hang out with Jackson behind the scenes.
“On my way to Dannielynn’s second Janet Jackson concert (my millionth) in Cincinnati as we sit here debating which of us is the biggest Janet fan,” Larry wrote Instagram.
At the Barnstable-Brown Gala in May, Dannielynn wore the exact same dress Jackson wore in 2003.
