Under the guise of doing away with witchcraft, the initial flashback seemed to show how state-sanctioned misogyny began to spread in communities. Rowan and Ciprien were trapped in the Mayfair house because Lasher made it difficult for them to get out.
He wanted Ciprien to die there so that Rowan would stay with him. Rowan makes a deal with Lasher to “play his game” to save Sip. In the process, he tells more people about her abilities, which kills Carlotta. The Talamasca cure Sip, but his sister Odette discovers he works for them.
