Sacramento officials say two women died when a man in a stolen SUV ran a red light and crashed into them. Police caught the man trying to steal another car. They later discovered that he had been drinking.
In a press release, the California Highway Patrol said the man, who was 22 years old and from Sacramento, ran a red light heading north at the intersection of French and Florin roads and hit two women heading west on Florin. The crash caused the car the women were in to hit a white van parked nearby.
Mark Leavitt, a spokesman for the CHP in South Sacramento, said the two women died at the scene. A 49-year-old Sacramento woman was behind the wheel and a 42-year-old Sacramento woman was riding with her.

Sergeant Amar Gandhi of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said one of their deputies heard the crash and found the suspect trying to leave the scene. Gandhi says the deputy caught him trying to steal another car nearby.
Gandhi said the sheriff’s office heard about a purse theft before the crash. The suspect in the Florin Road accident had attempted to steal a woman’s car keys at her home near French and Gerber Roads in Sacramento, but she was able to fight him off.
Gandhi says the man, who was driving the Toyota RAV4 when it crashed, then stole another car near Billfish Way. In a press release, CHP said the man stole the Toyota at 10 a.m. by threatening the driver with a knife.

CHP said once the man is medically cleared, he will be arrested on charges of gross manslaughter with a vehicle while intoxicated, misdemeanor DUI causing injury/death, and misdemeanor hit and run. Authorities have not yet released the names of the man and the two ladies… When we get more updates on the man’s name, we’ll try to update the same post or post a new one.
