4-year-old Athena Brownfield’s babysitter beat her to death

According to court documents, Ivon Adams, one of Athena Brownfield’s caretakers at the time of her disappearance, beat the child to death and buried her near their former residence. On January 10, Athena’s disappearance was initially reported to police in Cyril, Oklahoma, when Athena’s 5-year-old sister was spotted by a mail carrier wandering outside the residence.

Last Monday, both Adams and his wife were taken into custody and charged with various crimes related to the case. The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation said Tuesday they had found the remains of a child, which will be sent to a medical examiner’s office for confirmed identification.

Adams’ wife, Alysia, allegedly told police on Jan. 12 that her husband had beaten Athena on Christmas night and “held her by the arms,” according to the affidavit for his arrest. Athens was “didn’t move and her eyes were barely open,” the statement claimed.

She is charged with the crime, according to the criminal affidavit filed Tuesday in Caddo County District Court “failing to protect (Athena) from physical abuse” by her husband and van “not providing enough care” for the children.

The children’s biological mother entrusted them to the couple about two years prior, but the affidavit claims in her case that they never took Athena’s older sister for medical checkups or enrolled her in school. During her court appearance, Alyssa Adams pleaded not guilty.
